I am pleased to announce our next show opening Thursday July 25th, “All That We Have and Lost” by Zoe Spiliotis. Zoe is an artist living and working in the enchanting and equally surreal landscape of New Mexico, drawing inspiration from mathematical principles as a source for form, both artistically and conceptually. Her work invites viewers to reevaluate their beliefs, perceptions, and understanding of reality. Through the intricate interplay of repetitive modules and patterns, Spiliotis delves into the enigma of life's paradoxical unity, inviting audiences on a contemplative journey toward transcendence and infinity.

Spiliotis holds an AS in Graphic Design from Valencia Community College (Orlando, FL), a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design (Philadelphia, PA) and an MFA from New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, NM). She exhibits nationally/internationally, is represented in collections across the country such as the City of El Paso, Orlando Public Library System, and University of New Mexico Hospital-Albuquerque and has created public artwork in New Mexico, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Venezuela. She has been awarded two Mellon Fellowships through the Humanities Collaborative UTEP-EPCC, for her projects to develop a color palette representing the culture and history of the City of El Paso and for documenting the student experience of community college students in El Paso.

Spiliotis is also a devoted advocate for the arts and arts educator at El Paso Community College, leveraging her passion to create and promote opportunities for students, fellow artists, and the wider public. As the founding member and current director of La Mecha Contemporary, a non-profit, artist-led contemporary art gallery in El Paso, Texas, she creates a space dedicated to celebrating the vibrancy of art and fostering artistic dialogue in the Borderland. Her directorial role at La Mecha Contemporary reflects a commitment to showcasing the work of contemporary women and under-represented artists, offering a platform for voices that might otherwise go unheard in the region.

“All That We Have and Lost” is on view from July 25th- August 24th.

Tribute to Maestro Fernando De Anda

The exhibition celebrates the life and work of a beloved visual artist from Aguascalientes. Recognized for his role as a professor in the Art Department at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, De Anda left a profound mark on the artistic community in the border region between Mexico and the United States. Many of his works are family portraits that capture the essence and intimacy of his loved ones, reflecting a deep sense of cultural identity and connection to his roots.

This show brings together a selection of his most representative pieces, offering a journey through his artistic evolution and his commitment to cultural dissemination. Through these portraits, Maestro De Anda not only preserves the memory of his family but also invites us to explore the universality of human relationships. His works continue to inspire new artists, reminding us of the importance of art as a means of expression and resilience. His legacy endures in each portrait, in each lesson, and in the memory of those who knew him.

La Mecha Contemporary is proud to introduce Founding Member Adrián Aguirre. Adrian Aguirre is a Mexican-American artist whose work focuses on the politics of immigration and the people caught in the middle. Aguirre grew up on both sides of the El Paso/Juarez border, crossing the bridge daily to attend school. This experience influenced his perspective on borders and immigration. Aguirre’s fine artwork has always been political, but his focus on immigration began in North Texas while attending the MFA program. There, he spent months drawing migrant workers at a day labor site in Denton, TX. He has since traveled to refugee camps and volunteered with immigrant advocacy groups

The exhibition "Rostros en la Encrucijada" by Juarez born artist, Adrián Aguirre, includes a series of portraits of refugees and scenes of border agents blocking entry. In these charcoal drawings and oil paintings, some sections are meticulously rendered, providing a tangible sense of presence, while others feature intentional loose strokes or are deliberately left open. This technique serves to emphasize movement, activate the space, and, most importantly, express an emotional connection to the individuals depicted in the work. Fundamentally, the work is about connecting the viewer emotionally to those who have risked everything to come to this country.

As a former volunteer for the Border Servant Corps, artist Adrian Aguirre was saddened to hear that they recently lost their federal funding due to re-appropriation. This means that hundreds of migrant families will lose housing as of June 30th. These are immigrants who have been authorized to enter the US and who are awaiting their hearings.

The El Paso Community Foundation is seeking donations to help with this upcoming surge of homelessness. To help raise money, Adrian is donating the proceeds from one of his most recent works, a very unique relief print “Fronterizaje” made in collaboration with artists Chris Bardey and Francisco Delgado.

From the Border Servant Corps website-
BETTER TOGETHER
DO JUSTICE • LOVE KINDNESS • WALK HUMBLY

Here at Border Servant Corps, we know that it takes each of us – together – to create "the change we wish to see in the world" -Mahatma Gandhi.

Since 1997 we have served the U.S./México borderlands. We collaborate with partners – community members, schools, churches, and organizations – locally and from around the country to bring people together to make a positive impact.

In everything we do, we recognize that it is through collaboration – valuing each person – we can create the world we hope to experience and pass on to future generations.

Come see the print in person during our opening this Last Thursday, May 30th 6-9pm. Don’t miss your chance to own this wonderful art piece and to help support a most deserving organization.
