I first found The Hooten Hallers 10 years ago; nearly 10 years after their start. Oh to be able to hear them for that extra decade! They were playing a mid-afternoon set at a larger fest, sharing a bill with some huge names. John Randall's lap steel and vocal growl, Kellie's "Big Mama" baritone sax, and Andy standing at the kit hitting crazy falsettosโand I was f*ckin' hooked! Not exactly flush with cash that weekend, so I (Andrew) bought exactly one record: their newest album, self-titled from 2016, featuring 'Charla' and 'Rhythm & Blues.' I kinda haven't shut up about them since.
We're lucky to be able to snag HH once again after they tore the late night Lake Stage to *shreds* in 2023. If you don't believe us, pop out to the Main Stage on Saturday, September 12 and watch the band's high-octane raucous jams, tight vocal harmonies, and danceable grooves that make for a wild night and an unforgettable music experience.
Morphine meets ZZ Top mixed with a dash of George Thorogood and Tom Waits. Anyone who has seen this band live knows that this group is unlike anything theyโve experienced before.
In April of this year, The Hooten Hallersโ 7th official full length album entitled Van Jams Vol. 1 emerged from nearly two decades worth of sing-a-longs while racking up more than half a million miles in a van. This collection of songs both resonated with and influenced the band and spans across decades of rock, punk, country, soul, R&B, and indie; all delivered with the signature sound fans have come to expect. Johnโs powerful, gravely lows and Andy's buttery high tenor, jangly electric guitar, pounding drums, and soaring bass lines on the baritone sax. One could be taken aback by the pairing of Roky Erickson, David Bowie, Morphine, and George Jones, but the bandโs wide ranging musical tastes serve to bring the listener on a strangely cohesive ride and shows just how far this trio can push the limits of whatโs musically possible. This album is the embodiment of an epic years-long road trip with no end in sight.
