When the treble bridge on your piano looks like this one, with severe cracking where the bridge pins go in, it's a good idea to get it fixed soon, before the entire bridge is damaged. We have fixed bridges like this in under 3 hours, with a return visit to retighten the affected strings. You can sometimes tell if the bridge is cracked by listening to the string which will sound dead and flat with no sustain, as all the downbearing and tension is gone. Replacing an entire bridge involves removing the old one entirely and refabricating a new one in a shop.

If you need an easy way to move your upright piano around a building, twin dollies are a good option. Each dolly is secured to the rear of the piano with heavy bolts once it is in place. This is a pair recently ordered for a school in St. Louis.

Here's a small jig I've used to remove the pins on piano pedals for easy repair or replacement -- using a simple automotive tie rod puller, wrench, and the careful placement of the pedal, which can be clamped to the device if necessary. A small countersink hole drilled in the end of the nut helps keep the pin from moving or bending as the bolt is tightened. A piano can also be put on its back and the entire bottom removed, but it is obviously more involved. On some pianos a pedal can be removed without removing the pins entirely. - S. Rensberry
