✨️OPEN MIC ✨️

Our monthly open mic is getting dressed up for October ✨️

Since March 2022, Unfolded: Poetry Project has gathered our community for monthly poetry open mics, usually at the end of each month, creating space to listen, write, speak, and connect.

This month, we’re taking that tradition to Bodega Tavern & Kitchen ( Bodega Tavern & Kitchen ) and making the evening a little extra special.

For her birthday, our Unfolded Ambassador Raven (The Peoples Poet ) asked for something simple: to listen to poetry.

She’ll be our MC for the evening, and we are so happy to celebrate her, our October open mic, and all of our Libra poets celebrating birthdays this month 🌹

Doors open at 6:00 PM, and we strongly encourage you to come early and choose your spot. We’ll be gathering in Bodega’s private dining room, which can accommodate approximately 60 guests.

Seating in the poetry room will be first come, first seated. If the room reaches capacity, additional guests may need to sit in the main dining area, away from the readings.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from a limited menu throughout the evening.

Poetry begins at 7:00 PM and will wrap around 9:15 PM, but Bodega is open until 11:00 PM, so stay, celebrate, eat, drink, and continue the conversation with us.

Please RSVP through our Partiful link (link-in-bio) 🗓

All are welcome, and your RSVP helps us give Bodega a headcount so they can prepare for a beautiful evening with our poets and community.

As always, our open mic is free and open to poets, writers, artists, listeners, feelers, and thinkers. You do not have to read to belong in the room.

🗓 Friday, October 23rd
📍Bodega Tavern & Kitchen, 2901 N. 10th St., McAllen
➡️ Doors open at 6:00 PM
📖 Poetry begins at 7:00 PM

Come early. Find your spot. Stay for the poetry 🤎

✨ WORKSHOP ✨

Led by The High Priestess ( The High Priestess ) -- our beloved Ambassador!

What energy are you carrying with you?

In this workshop, The High Priestess will guide us through different stones and crystals, the meanings and symbolism associated with them, and the energies they’re traditionally believed to attract, strengthen, or protect.

Then, we’ll turn inward.

What are you carrying?
What are you protecting?
What are you calling toward yourself?
What are you ready to release?

Through reflection and writing, we’ll use stones as symbols to explore our own energy, intentions, boundaries, and the things we choose to carry with us ✨

✨ WORKSHOP ✨

Led by Camba Cat Art (Camba Cat Art)

Fourteen lines. A little structure. A lot of possibility!

This workshop explores the history and different forms of the sonnet, from Petrarchan and Italian to Shakespearean, and the rhythm and rhyme that give the form its unmistakable shape.

Then, we’ll put it into practice by writing our own Shakespearean sonnets.

Bring a memory, an emotion, or someone you want to write to, and discover how structure, imagery, and poetic devices can help shape it into something worth remembering.

No experience with sonnets or iambic pentameter required. We’ll learn it together. 📝

✨ WORKSHOP ✨

Led by Emmanuel Con Dos Emmes (Emmanuel Con Dos Emmes)

What makes a line unforgettable?

Rhetorical figures are techniques that make language striking and memorable, not necessarily by changing what we say, but by changing how we say it.

Together, we’ll explore some of the not so secret tricks writers have used for centuries to create lines that stay with us, and then put those techniques to work in our own poetry.

✨ WORKSHOP ✨

What have you left unspoken?

Led by our Unfolded founder Victoria Lopez ( Victoria Lopez) -- we will explore the 'moment' we step forward and give voice to what has been living within us

Through soliloquy, poetic monologue, and proclamation (and some other supporting poetic devices) we’ll demonstrate how emotion, audience, and poetic voice can transform what we need to say -- and how and when we choose to say it.

✨ WORKSHOP ✨

It’s back! 🌸

By popular demand, Emmanuel ( Emmanuel Con Dos Emmes) returns to lead our annual Haiku workshop

Known for capturing vivid moments in only a few lines, haiku is beloved for its simplicity, attention, and ability to hold nature, emotion, and fleeting experience in very few words.

We’ll explore the origins, playful qualities, and common misconceptions of haiku and discover how this poetic form balances structure with freedom.

Whether it’s your first haiku or your fiftieth, join us and see how a few carefully chosen words can say so much
