National Lutheran Choir The National Lutheran Choir features a roster of more than 65 volunteer singers from various backgrounds and faith traditions.

The National Lutheran Choir celebrates, invigorates, and expands sacred choral music, bringing inspiration and meaning to people of diverse faiths and backgrounds. Founded in 1986 by the late Larry Fleming, grown under the direction of David Cherwien from 2002-2023, and now led by Jennaya Robison, the National Lutheran Choir sings a spiritual story through diverse repertoire including selections f

rom early chant and simple folk anthems to complex choral masterworks and new compositions. In addition to concertizing in the Twin Cities and on annual tours, the choir serves a serves a national audience through artfully produced digital content, concert livestreams, and other releases on YouTube. A discography of 36 recordings showcases the ensemble’s music making over the years and presents hymns, choral classics, contemporary works, spirituals, and major new works commissioned by the National Lutheran Choir. Much of this influential new work is featured in MorningStar Music’s collection, “The National Lutheran Choir Series.” The National Lutheran Choir has been honored with the Wittenberg Award from the Luther Institute, Chorus America’s Margaret Hillis Award, and the Dale Warland Singers Commissioning Award.

This month we're celebrating our 2026/2027 season collaborators, and today we're highlighting the Bach Society of Minnesota and their Artistic Director Matthias Maute.

The Bach Society of Minnesota was founded in 1931, and was one of the first organizations in North America to take the legacy of J.S. Bach as a starting point for performances and programming. Under the artistic direction of Matthias Maute, an accomplished and award-winning conductor, composer, and recorder and flute soloist, the Bach Society communicates the depths and passions of Bach's compositions through period instruments and historical practices.

We are delighted to welcome Tom Trenney as our clinician for the annual NLC Tune Up on January 30th, where he will share his gifts as composer, conductor, and inspiring musical leader!

Tom has been blessed to serve as Minister of Music to First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, since 2009. In 2019, he was invited to become Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at Nebraska Wesleyan University where he now holds the Susan Sehnert Stuart Professorship in Choral Music. Tom’s choirs have been honored to perform for state, regional, and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and they have been award winners in the American Prize for choral ensembles. In 2023, Tom was honored with the Raabe Prize for Choral Composition from the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, and in 2024, Tom was named the Nebraska Music Education Association's Music Educator of the Year.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music, Tom is grateful for the inspiration of his teachers and mentors – especially Anton Armstrong, David Davidson, Craig Hella Johnson, (Mister) Fred Rogers, William Weinert, Anne Wilson and Todd Wilson.

We are so excited for the Minnesota Boychoir to join us in singing J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion this March!

Now in its 65th season, the Minnesota Boychoir is the oldest continually operating boys choir in the Twin Cities. Their reputation for excellence has brought invitations from local and national music conventions, as well as sporting events and touring Broadway companies. The choir has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Prague Philharmonic, and a long list of local and national performers. The Boychoir has traveled to five continents with recent tours that included performances at Sydney’s Opera House, Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, Montserrat Abbey in Barcelona, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa. The Minnesota Boychoir trains young men to be outstanding musicians and strives to help them develop a sense of poise and self-confidence through education and performance.
