Edina Chorale

Edina Chorale The Edina Chorale is a nonprofit mixed voice community choir directed by Paige Armstrong. EC is proud of the "lifetime of choral singing" the group represents.

There are 3-4 concerts each season featuring a broad repertoire of traditional, classical, contemporary, and pop choral music. The Edina Chorale is a place singers come to rediscover and extend their musical lives. Most members sang in high school and college choirs, and many were trained in the fine Minnesota choral traditions. Some singers find EC mid-life, when careers are stable and children a

re becoming more independent. EC also has a sizeable and growing number of recent college graduates who haven't missed a beat - they slide right into the group and continue the choral singing they enjoyed during college. We perform 3-4 major concerts during the year. We sing traditional choral music (often during the holiday season), classical works, and contemporary favorites. To say the Edina Chorale's repertoire is varied and eclectic would be an understatement. A recent season, "Winter White, Concert Black, Red Carpet" featured traditional holiday music (e.g. John Rutter, Irving Berlin), a festival of Baroque music with a chamber orchestra (Handel, Bach and three lesser known composers), and a contemporary concert accompanied by a jazz band (highlights were "Moon River", "Skyfall" and "Time Warp"). Not many choirs feature the works of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Eric Whitacre and Giavanni Gabrielli in the same season! Edina Chorale singers meet for weekly choral and sectional rehearsals to develop our musical skills. Currently, we rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30 from September through May, usually at Edina High School. Most concerts include several pieces by a smaller ensemble (20-24 voices) to give more experienced singers within the Edina Chorale the opportunity to perform music specifically written for smaller ensemble, and develop their music skills in this environment. Auditions for these groups are held near the start of each concert season.

Did you know The Edina Chorale has had just five Artistic Directors in its 40-year history?

Phil Spencer founded the choir in 1985 and led the group through 1990, followed by Jim Hawthorne from 1990–1992. Tom Paulson served as Artistic Director from 1992–2017, with Paul McKenzie joining the artistic staff as Assistant Director in 2006. John Hoffacker led the Chorale from 2017–2019, and Paige Armstrong has served as Artistic Director since 2019.

As part of this weekend's 40th Anniversary Pops Concerts, we’re thrilled to welcome back the last three directors — along with alumni singers — to perform some favorite pieces from across the decades. We hope to see you there!

After a year as a treble ensemble, The Edina Chorale re-established as a mixed voice choir and a non-profit organization in 1986. Today, five original members—Jane Nilan, Maureen Rendahl, Gary Taylor, David Turk, and Christine Warren—are still singing with us! Photo circa 2010!
