This project feels extra special to me. Somewhere between finishing the last classes for my bachelor’s in accounting and realizing my first baby is about to turn 4 years old, I’ve been spending my free time bringing this giant ant to life for him.

It’s honestly a little emotional seeing both things happen at once. One chapter of my life is finally ending after years of hard work, late nights, pregnancies, breastfeeding, and assignments squeezed into every spare second. At the same time, my little boy who made me a mom is growing up so fast and getting excited over every tiny update on this project.

The body is officially finished and next up are the legs, antennae, mandibles, and details. I seriously cannot wait to see his face when he finally gets his ant friend.

Part 2 of the giant carpenter ant for my son’s 4th birthday 🐜 switching gears to the thorax while I rethink the mandibles… this one’s definitely a trust the process project.

Fun fact: carpenter ants communicate by tapping and releasing chemicals called pheromones to guide each other to food and warn of danger.

Turning my son’s bug obsession into a giant carpenter ant for his 4th birthday 🐜 Inspired by Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and running on no pattern, just vibes. Deadline is May 12th and I’m posting each part as I finish it… this should be interesting.

Fun fact: carpenter ants don’t actually eat wood, they chew through it to build their nests.

Prep mode is officially ON over here and my crochet corner looks like a yarn tornado in the best way 😅 I’m getting everything ready for my next market and I’m seriously so excited to bring a fresh batch of cuties with me

Some of the patterns I’ve been loving while I work through market prep have been the cutest little mermaids by and the hammerhead + seahorse patterns by They’ve been so fun to make and honestly the kind of projects that make you want to keep saying “just one more” at midnight 😂
