So, today I finished this fun little 5 gallon metal frame tank for a pair of Lucania goodei I was lucky enough to snag. What is more peculiar, is that this tank originally belonged to my father Allen Shmaefsky. In the true, standing on the shoulders of giants fashion, I was excited too bring this tank back to life after what has to be almost 40 years. It was a pain erasing the years or rust And peeling off the layers of tar, but I love that I get to hold on to a peace of the hobby and a passion my father unknowingly passed to me.

For this design, I wanted to create an environment for a special type of fish from a unique situation. Evolving in expansive limestone lakes, The diverse African cichlids adapted to high phs and similar water conditions to that of the oceans. Some (like the shell dwellers) stayed small and created homes of the discarded shells found at the bottom of the lake where others grew large And swam openly. This tank was designed for the prior of the 2, but wholey rock backgrounds are perfect for either. Now, I know Texas holey rock is not found In Africa, but it became popular with African cichlid owners because of its limestone buffering properties very similar to the cichlids natural home and because the bright white makes for a perfect contrast with the colorful cichlids.
These backgrounds will not change ph, but mimic the properties of the rock with a much lighter weight while still remaining durable.

So, I'm making a fun change to the way I post new tank designs to Rockaqua! People have both asked how I design my tanks and what to call my designs. So, I've decided to do tank profiles. These profiles will go over what inspires me to come up with the designs I make and give customers a easier way to choose the style they like!
