Today marks the day took his last breath.
Roger died from testicular cancer that metastasized to his brain, meninges, and spinal cord. Three years have passed, yet the pain of not having him here seems to grow with each passing day. Grief has a way of deepening, even as life continues to unfold around it.
When Roger was born, he taught me not only how to be a mother, but also how to see and care for others, pursue my dreams, and become a better person. Now, through his death and the grief that followed, he continues to teach me. I am learning that joy and gratitude are not the opposite of sorrow, they are what make this journey through life meaningful.
And life does continue, bringing with it many blessings. Alongside the sorrow, I carry immense gratitude, for my family, my friends, my neighbors, and all those who help make this pain bearable. Their love reminds me that even in loss, there is still connection, kindness, and light.
Today, I get to spend the day with this little one, who is pure joy. Moments like these do not erase the ache, but they help me carry it.
Today we also started to put up a Little Free Library and a bench in front of our home in Roger's memory. It feels fitting, because Roger spent his life teaching me to care more deeply for others. May this small space offer books, rest, conversation, and kindness to neighbors and strangers alike. May it be one more way his love continues to ripple outward into the world.
I miss you, my baby, more than words can ever express. Not a day goes by that I do not think of you, love you, and wish you were still here.
Thank you for all that you taught me in life, and for all that you continue to teach me through your absence.
