This week's Song of the Week comes from local recording artist Courtney Hartman!
With You: From the Garden Shed is an intimate re-rendering of Courtney Hartman’s most recent album. The idea for the project came to her as she sat on the floor, playing the songs from With You for her daughter while preparing to take them on tour. Our Song of the Week is "Honey, Honey" from the record.
Hartman and her husband originally bought their garden shed to live in while reconstructing their home. “After we moved back into our house, the shed became a place of quiet and stillness for me, where I would retreat to most mornings to write,” Hartman explains. “Most of the songs on With You began in the gentle hold of that space. It felt right to take them back to the empty room where they began, playing them again against a chorus of May birds and our neighbor’s chimes.”
Shane Leonard co-produced the album and recorded it live on a reel-to-reel Nagra tape machine, keeping the space free of screens or digital recording gear. In an era of inhuman AI perfection, it is a treasure to hear the honest, undeniably human renditions of these songs — to be wrapped in the intimacy and presence of Hartman’s swaying rhythm and voice.
