I got a mailer yesterday of somebody calling themselves the blank blank roadshow who are coming to colorado. These groups, reserve rooms or ballrooms in local hotels and solicit locals to come in to.get their pieces “appraised “ . I got no problem with dealers trying to make money. I’m a dealer. part of the equation is we can make money off of our purchases. But I’d think sometimes the use of the word appraisal event for these traveling operations is a misnomer. My advice is find a local dealer Who’s an expert in the area that you want to collect or in the area that you have material and have a sit down with them. ask questions. become informed. These events are really not appraisal operations they’re buyers and that is just fine however, I found after 35 years in the antiques and art business educating the customer is a good first step. If the client understands what they have why it’s valued a certain way then they are operating from a good informed position. Then if it’s for sale you can take the next step.
