Island Aerial Acrobatics

Island Aerial Acrobatics The Island Aerial Acrobatics program creates a fun and safe environment to explore aerial movement and develop skills. All the kids had so much fun!

Structured classes and performance opportunities help students find their limits and conquer fears. In performances, students master aerial routines and develop stage presence. The Island Aerial Acrobatics provides an opportunity to practice this unique art form for islanders who would otherwise not have access to this kind of program. How it all started:

The aerial arts adventure started for me

in 2008, when my son, Kajetan, went to a summer circus day camp. They kids were introduced to aerial silks. He loved it so much we decided to get him a silk to hang in our house for his birthday. That year we hardly needed any other toys for him to play with ! Kajetan, then nine, and my daughter Naya, five at the time, spent every free moment "hanging out", making up games and building "floating forts" with the beautiful silk fabric. When the same aerial artists who offered the circus camp came back to the island for a month in the winter and held an adult class, I signed up. In the class, we had access to silks, trapeze, and a hoop. Because I am athletic and naturally strong, I was able to pick up a lot in that class. By the next November, when Kajetan's birthday came around, we decided to rent a space at the Orcas Center Theater for a birthday party. At that point, there were four aerial silks in the community, and we were able to borrow them for the party. Right then, watching them, I knew with my background in dance, martial arts, and sports, that I could teach these kids the basics. I started teaching one class a week for Kajetan and his friends. a year later, when Naya turned seven, I started another class for her friends! Through teaching, playing, watching Youtube, and taking classes myself in Seattle and Europe, my confidence and knowledge grew. It made me so happy to watch my students grow stronger and get comfortable with being upside down. They got more flexible, developed their body awareness and grace. To this day watching them grow keeps me inspired! The year after that, the word spread and I had more inquiries, so I added classes accordingly, and now I teach 12 classes a week starting with five year old kids, including all elementary ages, teens, and adults.

Gravity does the work: the practice is slow, deliberate, and often uncomfortable;
More challenging mentally than physically;
Can be customized but generally focuses on hip, hamstring, back, and shoulder mobility;
Is not yoga, is not restorative, is not injury prevention, is not physical therapy;
Is not for anyone who has had a joint replacement or is on chronic pain medication;
Is not for anyone who has hyper-mobile joints;
Available for small-group, semi-private, and private classes.

Gentle Stretching:
Balanced stretching for the entire body;
Positions held for 15-30 seconds at a time with movement in between the holds;
Customized modifications for all positions using bolsters, blocks, straps, chairs, balls, or anything else which aids in going deeper into each stretch;
Excellent for those just beginning their journey toward a more flexible body;
Because of the individualized nature of this class, it is currently available for private and semi-private classes only (small-group classes may be available in the future).

Strength and Stretch:
First half of each class focuses on body-weight type strength exercises;
Intensity can be modified for individual fitness level;
Last half of each class focuses on Targeted Flexibility poses;
