Moon Over Buffalo

ATOI is currently performing Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo, a comedic play in two acts, now through July 26th at the Grange.

Directed brilliantly by Robert Hall, Moon is a blistering, farcical, shapeshifting delight, guaranteed to make Orcas audiences forget whatever else might have soured the island mood.

“Exactly,” said Hall after the Friday [July 17th] performance. “We all need escape. Whether it’s the late rent check or peeling paint in your reflecting pool, just come to the Grange and laugh your socks off. It’s what we do.”

Moon spins the story of a 1953 family-owned theater troupe barely scraping by in stodgy Buffalo, New York. Things get complicated. They bicker. They fall. Grandma gets confused. Dad is drunk. Now everybody’s confused. Someone got someone pregnant. OK, hug. And door slamming becomes a rhythmic art form.

Hall delights in androgynous casting, featuring powerful portrayals of mustachioed George Hay (Dorrie Braun) and lovestruck lawyer Richard Maynard (Aaimee Johnson). “Orcas is made for this play,” he said.

George’s wife Charlotte (Luann Pamatian), daughter Roz (Anna Seguin), hard-of-hearing Grandma (Suzanne Gropper), Roz' ex-squeeze Paul (Zac Everly), current stumblebum suitor Howard (Don Yerly), and just-a-little-bit pregnant Eileen (Victoria Smith) comprise the rest of what Hall calls “the best ensemble cast I have ever worked with.”

In “Moon Over Buffalo,” a delightful and hilarious backstage farce by Ken Ludwig, we meet Charlotte and George Hay, a struggling acting duo on tour in Buffalo in 1953. Their repertoire features a quirky rendition of “Cyrano de Bergerac” and Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” As fate would have it, they have a golden opportunity to impress legendary director Frank Capra, who is on his way to catch their performance. However, the chaos unfolds as Charlotte contemplates escaping with their agent and George fights to stay sober enough to deliver his lines. With a whirlwind of hilarious misunderstandings and madcap adventures, this play celebrates the passions and predicaments of theater life, making it a heartfelt tribute to the dedicated “theater hams” everywhere.
