Easton Summer Cinema Films about women and gender non-conforming people

07/14/2020

Greetings in the Dog Days of Summer!

I’m thinking about starting up the film and discussion series again. It would not be associated with Village on College Hill nor supported by Lafayette College.

Consequently, it will have to be free share and self regulated. I am planning to launch in the fall when things begin to shut down again and we are looking for cultural outlets to see us through the winter.

Looking for serious adults who want to watch fine films and discuss them civilly in an online platform (Zoom?). We’ve already plenty of ideas from good folks who’ve been suggesting great films all along. We could set up a list, an agenda of films that are available from widely used distributors, watch them in advance, and then discuss them on a Zoom-like call.

I know it’s not perfect, but does that sound viable?

Let’s not get into a lot of rules or control freaks. Just an honest dedication to thoughtful group discussion of art. We’ll definitely need technical support.

If you want to stay with us and attend as a discussant and aficionado, please type your name in the comment box. If you would like to join a small leadership group for a launch, please message us with your ideas, esp. on what you can contribute to the effort.

I thought we built up wonderful community. I miss you all.

Nothing worthwhile is easy. Peace out. Carol

FREE: Join us Tues Aug 6 at 7 pm for our SEASON FINALE: 42nd St. (1933). Classic musical co-directed by Lloyd Bacon and the incomparable Busby Berkeley. A down on his luck director is hired to produce what he believes is his last Broadway show. He rehearses the cast mercilessly only to have the leading lady break her ankle the night before opening. An unknown chorus girl (from Allentown, PA) gets her big chance.

Though she was not one of these leads, 42nd St. was Ginger Roger's first successful film. Berkeley's musical productions and direction techniques stand the test of time: get ready for a tuneful uplifting romantic frolic!

Easton Summer Cinema is presented by the Village on College Hill and the Film and Media Studies Department at Lafayette College. We are grateful to the President's Office at Lafayette College for their generous support.

We are air conditioned and handicapped accessible -- and even our parking is FREE. Optional friendly discussions follow each film.

MOONLIGHT (2016) Rated R.
A tender heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself amid a rough Miami neighborhood. The pain and beauty of growing up and falling in love is told across three defining chapters in his life while he grapples with his emerging sexuality and identity.

This film was the first with an all-black cast dealing with LGBTQ issues to win an Oscar for Best Motion Picture and a Golden Globe award.
