Freedom is the space to look upward. To gather with those you love. To seek light and imagine.

The work in 'Landscapes Within' shows us internal landscapes of freedom—what it looks like when Black artists are free to create worlds of dignity, joy, and transcendence.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth. Every day we celebrate the artists who paint those worlds.

Lionel Daniels is a D.C.-based fine artist and muralist whose vibrant mixed media work explores the intersections of Black history, spirituality, and speculative futures. Working with bold color, layered textures, and a deep reverence for cultural storytelling, he reimagines sacred iconography and creates work that celebrates Black identity, challenges systemic erasure, and envisions new possibilities.

His murals—commissioned by schools, churches, and cultural centers—serve as vibrant testaments to collective memory and hope. His work lives in public collections across the country, including Morehouse College and Spelman College.

For 'Landscapes Within', Daniels brings work that explores the internal landscapes of protection, empowerment, and spiritual agency.

Larry Horowitz starts en plein air—thousands of stimuli, changing light, sounds of the woods, distant sea. Then he brings it all into the studio for what he calls "a long distillation process." Months of work creating light and space.

"At some point, the painting develops a heartbeat, a life of its own where feelings can exist."

A former apprentice to Wolf Kahn who made custom pastels for Willem DeKooning and Frank Stella, Horowitz has spent decades developing work that falls somewhere between abstraction and reality—leaving out just enough information to invite you in.

Victoria Oniosun's rich, figurative paintings explore femininity, identity, and the invisible landscapes we all carry within.

"Through nature, I developed a deeper, more intuitive connection to God, making spirituality an essential thread in my practice rooted in presence, stillness, and observation," she explains. "Moving between figuration and abstraction, my painting explores the invisible landscapes that live within us."

In "Lush Green", a figure sits on grass, arms extended behind her, face turned up to the sun—a moment of complete openness and surrender. This is internal landscape rendered visible. Presence. Connection. The soul turning toward light.

Victoria joins Spiralis for Landscapes Within, showing through August 2.
