Artist introduction! Meet Matt Gardner!✨

Matt loves the primitive connection clay provides between earth, mind, and body. Its immediacy, malleability, and infinite reusability offer a satisfaction that feels like both meditation and craft — one that only deepens knowing his work is enjoyed through a hot drink, a delicious meal, or a bouquet of flowers.

Before clay, there was leather. Matt grew up in his family’s New Jersey luggage and leather goods store, working in the shop from an early age and eventually running the business for over a decade — thinking deeply about design and function, and working with his hands on repairs and custom leatherwork.

He discovered his passion for clay in 2012 at a Greenwich House Pottery wheel workshop in NYC, spending the next couple years taking classes there and learning from professional artists in the space. He went on to teach wheel classes and serve as glaze tech at a studio in north Jersey, before relocating to Massachusetts in 2021, where he now works out of Easthampton Clay and his home studio.

Primarily a wheel thrower, Matt enjoys altering thrown forms and has more recently begun experimenting with hand building. His aesthetic draws heavily on nature’s perfectly imperfect design, with a particular love of texture and the techniques used to achieve it.

Artist introduction! Meet Mike Izatt of Three Anvil Forge!✨

“Working with my hands has been a lifelong passion. From carving wood and turning bowls on a lathe to designing and building boats, I have always been drawn to creating objects that are both beautiful and built to last.

My journey eventually led me to metal, where years of experience in metal fabrication, welding, and tool and die making gave me the skills to shape steel with precision and purpose. Today, I combine those skills with traditional blacksmithing techniques to create heirloom-quality cookware, knives, and unique handcrafted pieces.

Every piece begins as raw steel, heated in the glow of a gas forge and carefully forged by hand with hammer, anvil, and hydraulic press. Fire, steel, and time transform simple materials into objects with character, strength, and lasting beauty.

No two pieces are ever exactly alike. The subtle marks left by the forging process are a testament to the hands that shaped them, making each piece truly one of a kind. My goal is to create functional works of art that are meant to be used every day, grow richer with age, and become treasured heirlooms for generations to come.”

Artist introduction! Meet Dave Shore!✨

“Wood itself is my inspiration. There is an element of discovery in the act of making boards from trees; planing them down to reveal the heartwood below. I like wood’s organic nature and its infinite possibilities in terms of design and function. My projects often combine wood species, bringing out color, grain and history, and I like to make random parquetry sheets that can be cut down for cabinetry or custom doors. Whether I am creating a functional or decorative piece, the fun is in experimenting. I use reclaimed barn board or found wood, live edge, and exotic veneers, often combining them with crayons, epoxy, stone, metal and lighting. I particularly like the art of Shou Sugi Ban (charring the wood surface with fire) for its color and matt finish, and the way it creates age and shadow on three-dimensional structures, such as my New England Barn series. Searching the backroads with drone and camera is part of the process and feeds the muse. I am continually inspired by the rapidly vanishing farm buildings of Vermont and by such artists as Duncan Johnson, Sam Malouf, John W. Long, Peter B. Judge and local woodworker Mike DiCamillo.”
