Its been over a month since the Bacardi and Northern hosted Island Ops 2026 and we've taken our visitor's suggestions to task, making layout improvements.

To this end, we've replaced all things related to our car cards, or "waybills". Check out the changes in the attached photos.

This is just the beginning. Other improvements are still to come, including the addition of mirrors to accompany the staging level cameras and more. Stay tuned!

A few quick photos from this weekend's Island Ops 2026. Over both Saturday and Sunday, we hosted 10 visitors from as far away as Chicago and California who operated 20 trains over a combined 7 hours. The railroad ran well beyond our expectations and everyone had only good things to say.

Thank you to Jim Schweitzer and the West Island Model Railroad Club for again sponsoring this event, and for including the B&N. Thanks also to Jimmy for his tireless hours and miles working on my signal system. Thank you also to all those who participated in the 5 "practice" sessions leading up to the event, especially Mark Sullivan who made almost every one and loaned us motive power when we ran short in the final days leading up. Finally a huge thanks to Nick Sincinito and Ronnie Schnepf for giving their time, patience and knowledge to be "helpers" during these sessions.

As always, the Bacardi and Northern is happy to host those interested in operating on this Conrail inspired layout set in 1995. If you'd like to be included in Ops Session Notifications, please message me and I'll happily add you to the list!

The Bacardi & Northern Model Railroad is based on the prototype, Conrail's Northern Branch in 1995. While the layout runs from North Bergen to Orangeburg, and the prototype at that time went only as far north as Northvale, the line originally ran from Jersey City to Nyack, Piermont and beyond. The history of this branch goes way back to the Erie Railroad in the 1830's. Stories of the line during its heyday are generally hard to find, but here we're lucky enough to have one co-written by Vincent Lee, a man fortunate enough to have seen the line in its entirety. While it focuses on the northernmost section of the line, it does a great job of capturing the feel of it at a time when the railroad still mattered! Enjoy...and thanks Vincent Lee!

Two operating sessions in the books, one Friday evening and one this afternoon, all in anticipation of Island Ops on April 18th and 19th. In total, things ran pretty well...surprising given the amount of work performed over the past several months. Electrical upgrades, track and switches repaired and replaced, equipment replaced and rebuilt, and computer programming changes to the dispatching system have combined to create a most enjoyable experience for all those involved. Special thanks to Jim Schweitzer for his endless hours of computer work, and to Jim, Galen Gouzoulis, Mark Guiffre, Mark Sullivan, Kevin Katta, and Chris Horton for their assistance in operations.

There will be another Operating Session this Thursday, April 9th beginning at 12 noon. Anyone additional session will be scheduled for one evening next week, likely Monday or Thursday. Anyone interested in either session is welcome to participate. Feel free to message me if you need information or directions at 516-297-6232.

It's been a long while since we did a "line tour" of the Bacardi and Northern, so for all you newbies, here's an overview of what we're all about.

The Bacardi and Northern is a fictional recreation of a prototype. This is to say, it is an HO Scale recreation of Conrail's (Erie's) Northern Branch between North Bergen NJ and Orangeburg NY circa 1995, when I worked for "Big Blue". In the real world, trackage only runs as far north as the NY/NJ line in Northvale, the rest converted to a Rail Trail, and operations north of Englewood are few and far between. But at the Bacardi and Northern, things are far more prosperous!

On my fictitious recreation, business is booming. Local operations have been farmed out to a shortline, Hence the Bacardi and Northern, and thier primary motive power consists predominantly of Alco Century models (think Delaware Lackawanna). Freight is booming with all the existent industries you would've found along the Northern in 1995, and many more that were resurrected. Whats more, tracks have been reinstalled all the way to Orangeburg where ample new freight customers have become the mainstay. To add to the prosperity, a connection was installed at Orangeburg to Conrail's River Line and mainline freight frequently detours over the B&N between Oak Island, Selkirk, South Kearny and Kingston. Thus it is not unusual to see a local freight switching with an Alco C420, being bypassed by a TrailVan Train headed up by Dash 8's and SD-60's. There's even commuter service operated by NJ Transit making stops at the old Erie stations along the line!

During a 3 hour operating session, you'll be operating trains almost non-stop. I use NCE tethered controls, but you're free to use the wireless app on your phone should you so desire. I also use portable radios to communicate with the Dispatcher. The railroad is fully signaled with detection. Local operations are manually controlled. The railroad is easy to navigate with a full schematic on the wall showing all locations and any special instructions, the staging level having interlocking located cameras for all hard to see locations. Positions available include three train operators (easy), two yard positions (some experience) and one dispatcher position (experience required). This said, there is usually a Trainmaster, available to assist you as needed!

The attached photos provide a tour of the line, not including the lengthy runs to and from the lower staging yards and helix connecting them. Also not shown is the Dispatcher panel which is a derivative of JMRI Panel Pro that permits wifi control of all interlockings and signaling.

Please enjoy and let me know if you have any questions. Ops sessions are held regularly, as well as upon request. Operations last 3 hours and accommodate 5 to 7 people.

On April 1st, 1976...50 years ago today...a number of struggling northeastern railroads were merged together to form CONRAIL. In July 1994, I left my job with Nassau County to follow my dream of working as a Conductor on the railroad. Conrail provided the open door and thus my career as a railroader was begun.

While only there for less than 3 years before hiring on to the LIRR, I am proud to say "I worked freight" with "Big Blue" and learned an awful lot in a short time. Trains may be romantic to some, but in the real world, they're noisy, dirty and deadly machines. I saw coworkers killed and more than my fair share of almost-accidents. I quickly learned that the feeling of power and being part of the ultimate "buff" experience pales in comparison to the loneliness of nights in some remote yard or motel, or falling asleep driving home after a long busy day, only to be called out for another job in a few hours; Endless missed events with family and friends; Riding the side of a boxcar with pouring rain running up your arms and into your rain gear as you try to hold on; Swarms of mosquitos eating you alive as you switch cars in sweltering heat; Numbing cold as you walk back 80 cars on an icy embankment along the edge of the Hudson to find out why your train went into emergency. ALWAYS being dirty and NEVER getting enough sleep!

That said, having worked yards, road and locals, I did a little bit of everything and truly experienced a Railroaders life, if only for a few years. I worked short locals hustling between passenger trains on NJ Transit, miles long freights with numerous locomotives, and even the Ringling Brothers circus train while it was still in its prime. I saw some amazing scenery along the Hudson River, through western New Jersey and upstate New York, with beautiful sunrises, sunsets and more stars than I knew existed. I also met some amazing people and even found an inspiration for the Bacardi & Northern Model Railroad!

Now retired from the Long Island Rail Road, I wish all my brothers still working both freight and passenger the best of luck. To my departed classmate Vinny Gramuglia, you are still missed. Thanks for the memories and the education. Conrail may be gone, but it's certainly not forgotten. Happy 50th Big Blue!!!

Greetings friends and followers! The Bacardi & Northern Model Railroad is proud to be a participant in this year's Island Ops 2026, sponsored by the West Island Model Railroad Club.

I'll be hosting ops sessions during Island Ops on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, April 18th and 19th, both beginning at 9am and lasting till noon. For these sessions, I'll be needing "helpers" who are familiar with the layout, and with its operations. If you're familiar and would like to lend a hand, please let me know.

Moreover, the next two weeks prior to Island Ops, I'm looking to host as many operating sessions as possible to ensure everything is operating as intended. Again, if you're available and interested, please message me and let me know your availability so I can schedule the sessions.

The past 6 months or so have seen numerous upgrades and improvements at the B&N including the operating system, signaling, track, dispatcher controls, rolling stock scenery and more. If you've operated here before, you should be happily surprised when you see it. If you're a newbie, I think you'll like it as well.

Again, I'm seeking helpers for Island Ops and operators for for sessions leading up. Please let me know if you're interested and what your availability is. Message me at 516-297-6232 or email me at [email protected].

Thank you in advance!

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who helped us with the huge train sales these past few months. Whether you bought a couple items, several flats or even just helped by spreading the word, we cannot thank you enough. I would be remiss if I didn't give a special shout out to the West Island Model Railroad Club for sharing the sales far and wide, and for the support of thier members.

I'm very happy to announce that ALL HO and On30 scale trains have been sold, along with structures and a host of other items. Remaining items are a considerable amount of O gauge trains and sets, G scale trains and some collectibles. Also remaining is this collectible scale model of the PRR Juniata River Bridge which desperately in need of a good home. It comes with a certificate of authenticity and we're willing to make a deal!

Several months ago when we began with these sales, we were overwhelmed to say the least. The owner of the collection wasn't expecting to make any real money, or to be able to sell off everything. She was most concerned about finding good homes for her late husband's prized collection. I'm beyond happy to say we are very close to achieving this goal, in it's entirety...thanks to all of you.

Now, if anyone is interested in the bridge, the O gauge trains or anything else I mentioned, please message me and we'll work out the details.

Again...THANK YOU ALL!
