Woke up Thanksgiving morning,
With a sunshine margarita grin,
I could smell those pies a-bakin’
Long before the guests drifted in.
But the day took a funny detour,
As only holidays can do,
When the turkey strutted out the kitchen door
And gobbled, “Buddy, I’m onto you.”
He swiped my favorite flip-flops,
Left a feather on the floor,
Said he’d rather hit the beaches
Than become the dinner décor.
So we chased him past the sandbar,
Through the backyard tiki lights,
’Til he dove into the kiddie pool
Like a feathery Key West knight.
We made a treaty on a napkin
Over pumpkin pie rum punch,
He said, “Spare me from the oven
And I’ll help you cook the lunch.”
So the turkey squeezed some limes,
And I basted with a smile,
We played Buffett on the stereo
And danced in barefoot style.
Dinner came out sideways,
As these island feasts will do,
But the laughter was delicious
And the gratitude was true.
Now every year I’m thankful
For friends both near and far,
For sunshine, tunes, and kindness
And a bird who’s now a star.
So here’s to goofy blessings
And to joy that never stops,
To rum-spiked sweet potatoes
And a turkey in flip-flops.
