TW: this may sting some people. Truth is sometimes not acceptable, but I am still going to say it....... Sometimes people speak without thinking. So, hopefully I wake some of you up to something that is incredibly rude to say. "I will get you some seeds then you can give me some of the produce. I can't garden myself, I have this issue, that issue, excuse, excuse, excuse." You would not believe how many people have said this or something like this to me.
The work that goes into gardening is worth way more than a few seeds. The time and labor spent making beds, building the greenhouse, shoveling soil, making compost, seed starting, keeping pests away, weeding, pruning, etc. is a big, consuming job. My time is worth much more than a few cents in seeds. Let alone the products and tools I need to make the garden successful.
Also, I appreciate question asking and seeking answers to listen because being talked at is annoying, and I am a patient and kind person most of the time. I will not just up and tell you that I have serious health issues myself and still sweat in the garden every year. I will not just come out and tell you that you're making excuses for not gardening because even people in apartments grow vertical gardens, even people in wheelchairs garden, and how extremely rude it is for you to expect me to do the work to feed you or your family when I have my own to feed (for the cost of a few seeds). 🤦
This isn't just a hobby for me. I don't bleed, sweat and cry (yes, there are sometimes wailing!) working every year for my enjoyment. I do enjoy it most of the time, but that isn't why I do it.
My goal is to eventually provide my family with most of our dietary needs. It takes time, a lot of effort, and the work put in is immeasurable. Especially starting from the ground up.
Don't be that person. If your friend has a garden, and you would like to pitch in, you can. They appreciate the help, I promise. No matter if it isn't the kind of work your gardening entrepreneur is putting in, it's something.
Besides, just being there to recognize the effort is enough for me. Don't just assume I am willing to give you space in my garden. When SHTF we will protect the garden from anyone we must. Except those who PUT IN THE WORK.
We are all sick and tired. Move on from that. Your strength is in Him. He will give you what you want and need. Just ask Him. He may hand you a shovel, a seed and a bag of dirt, perhaps an experienced friend, but He never said it was easy. It's not. It's worth it.
