This dynamic drawing exemplifies the kind of work by Italo Scanga that has been historically collected and exhibited by major American museums. Rich in Cubist influence and layered with complexity, Scanga's compositions continue to captivate audiences.
Born in southern Italy, Scanga immigrated to the United States in 1947 at the age of 15. A true multidisciplinary artist, his practice spanned sculpture, painting, and printmaking—working in diverse materials such as wood, metal, glass, acrylic, gouache, and charcoal.
Scanga taught sculpture at institutions including the University of Wisconsin and the Rhode Island School of Design, and in 1976, he joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego. Though active throughout his career, his work gained significant recognition in the mid-1980s, with major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker Art Center, and LACMA.
His legacy lives on through the important collections that house his work and the generations of artists he helped inspire.
