Walter S. Feldman (1925–2017) held solo exhibitions at the prestigious Kraushaar Galleries in New York in 1960, 1961, and 1963. Under the direction of Antoinette Kraushaar, the gallery was known for its integrity and deep ties to American artists, placing Feldman firmly within its roster of mid-century American modernists.
Feldman’s Window was included in his 1961 exhibition. Having studied directly with legendary modernists Josef Albers and Willem de Kooning at Yale, Feldman represents a direct bridge—a legacy—from early modernism to the new language of postwar abstraction.

While I was reading "The Cat in the Hat", the abstract world of art was becoming a force.

Po***ck, de Kooning and Albers were redefining Modernism, and Walter Feldman, during his Yale University student days, was absorbing these radical new ideas. He studied with both Willem de Kooning and Josef Albers—two very different approaches to abstraction that would leave their mark on his work.

Some of Feldman’s most successful large-scale abstractions of the 1950s are works in pastel and charcoal. Layers of rich color and energetic marks suggest the freedom of Abstract Expressionism, yet underneath is a strong compositional structure—the discipline that holds everything together.

Sometimes our youthful roommates quietly reshape our lives.

Louise Marianetti left the familiarity of Providence's Italian American community after studying at RISD to continue her art education at the Art Students League in New York. While working tirelessly in the studio, she shared an apartment with a young ballerina, gaining an intimate view into a life very different from her own. Visits to artists' studios, dance studios, and New York museums expanded and redirected her artistic vision. A Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition on American Magic Realism transformed Renaissance techniques into a new painting reality.

In The Strange World of Louise Marianetti, two paintings reveal that transformation: a quiet study of a ballerina practicing in the studio and an exquisitely detailed egg tempera painting of her roommate's ballet slippers. Ordinary moments became subjects of extraordinary attention, marking the point at which Marianetti's highly personal vision began to emerge.

Inspiration or appropriation?
In Lady with Mandolin, Louise Marianetti quietly pays homage to Leonardo da Vinci, borrowing the seated woman from The Virgin of the Rocks and placing her within Marianetti's own enigmatic world. Proud of her Italian heritage, Marianetti devoted her early career to studying the techniques of the great Italian masters. She transformed their visual language in egg tempera into dramatic figural paintings.
That tension between Renaissance precision and Marianetti's intensely personal, dreamlike imagination is one of the qualities that makes her work so compelling.

Lady with Mandolin is featured in The Strange World of Louise Marianetti, on view throughout August at bg Fine Art. It was exhibited in 1949 at Vose Gallery in Boston and the Newport Art Museum.
