Verne Allison, a founding member, second tenor and early songwriter of legendary R&B vocal group The Dells, has died at 90. Born in Chicago and raised in Harvey, Illinois, Allison and fellow Thornton Township High School classmates formed a vocal group in the early 1950s that would eventually become The Dells, one of the most enduring vocal groups in American music history.

The group’s breakout hit was “Oh, What a Night” in 1956. Their other smash hits included “Stay in My Corner” and “The Love We Had (Stays on My Mind),” while their 1991 appearance in “The Five Heartbeats” with a new hit song “A Heart Is A House For Love” helped introduce their music to a new generation.

The Dells’ career spanned nearly six decades and their sophisticated harmonies and vocal arrangements influenced generations of Black R&B and soul artists—making them pioneers of the genre. The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, recognizing their lasting impact on American music.

37 years ago today, October 7, 1989, "American Bandstand" aired its final episode on the USA Network, with the Cover Girls as the last musical guests, ending one of television's longest-running music shows.

The show began as "Bandstand," a local afternoon dance program on WFIL-TV in Philadelphia, in October 1952. Dick Clark took over as host on July 9, 1956, and ABC began airing it nationally as "American Bandstand" on August 5, 1957. It moved from weekdays to Saturday afternoons on September 7, 1963, and relocated to Los Angeles on February 8, 1964.

After ABC aired its final episode on September 5, 1987, the show moved to first-run syndication and then to the USA Network on April 8, 1989. Clark stepped down as on-camera host but stayed on as executive producer, and comedian David Hirsch took over hosting duties for the final six months.

Over its run, the show introduced generations of viewers to rock, pop and dance acts, popularized features like "Rate-a-Record," and made Clark "America's oldest teenager."
