What story would you tell?

While the Empowered Portrait Project is on view at Harpswell Collective, Nanette Gordon is offering three individual “Your Story, Your Portrait” sessions—a little space to reflect, share, and be seen.

You don’t need a finished story. Just a willingness to begin, in your own words and at your own pace.

$300 includes:
• A short Zoom conversation with Nanette
• Writing prompts to explore at home
• A 60-minute studio visit with conversation and photography
• Two finished digital portraits

Available through October 8. To reserve your session, DM us or email [email protected]

Before our gallery had walls, Kate the Earthling ® was building her moss collection for them.

Our earliest talks were about her love for the coast, her inspiration, how she works, and what I hoped the Collective could become. As Andy and I were building The Harpswell Collective, Kate began creating Ecotones—an eight-work collection inspired by her favorite places and love for Maine.

Her six-foot feature wall, Midcoast, was the first piece of art on our walls. I gasped when I saw it hung for the first time - Kate made something unmistakably her own that also felt deeply at home in Harpswell.

This week, she released a documentary about Ecotones on YouTube - and it’s extraordinary. The imagery and cinematography are beautiful, and the 13-minute film lets us spend time with the thought, skill and care behind her work.

Kate wears many hats exceptionally well and I’m excited for more people to discover just how much she brings to this collection and beyond.

This is what I hoped Harpswell Collective could be: a place where artists have room to create ambitious work, share the stories behind it, and connect with people who might never have found them otherwise.

I’m proud to share Kate’s film. Watch it at the link in our bio or on Kate the Earthling ® YouTube (Kate the Earthling).

If it moves you, please share it with someone who loves Maine, art or a beautifully told story. 💚✨

✨THE EMPOWERED PORTRAIT PROJECT✨
Seeing and Celebrating Women Over 50
Created by Nanette Faye Gordon

ABOUT THE PROJECT 📸
The Empowered Portrait Project brings together the portraits and written words of 33 women.

Each woman was invited to reflect on the experiences, relationships, choices, challenges, and joys that have shaped her life. Her writing became part of the portrait process, helping us consider how she wanted to be seen and what an honest portrait of her might look like.

This project was created in response to the ways women often become less visible as they age. It asks us to slow down, look more closely, and recognize the full lives present in these faces.

The women in this exhibit are not here to represent one idea of aging, beauty, strength, or womanhood. Each appears as herself, with her own history and voice.

This project is an invitation to see and celebrate women over 50, and to honor the woman each has become.

ABOUT THE ARTIST ✍️
The Empowered Portrait Project has been the work of my heart, bringing together the things I care most about: women, their stories, photography, and writing.

I’m a portrait photographer and writer based in Maine, and I have always been drawn to the stories women carry and the ways those stories make us who we are.

My work brings together writing, conversation, deep listening, and portraiture. I’m not looking for perfection or one particular idea of beauty. I want to create honest portraits that show something real about the woman in front of me.

At the heart of my work is a belief that every woman has a story worthy of telling and a face worthy of being seen. You are not too old. You are not too late. You are already enough.

Nanette Gordon 🤍

When you’re putting together a gallery show celebrating the stories and lives of women, it really does take a village to get the job done right!

My highest goal is always to represent, as honestly and authentically as I can, the women who have allowed me to tell their stories. And so many wonderful women have helped me prepare for this upcoming show.

A big thank you to Melissa York for being willing to jump in when needed, for offering her suggestions, attention to detail, and most of all, her patience as I changed my mind several times while trying to get everything just right!

I hope to see you at the opening reception for The Empowered Portrait Project: Seeing and Celebrating Women Over 50 on September 24 at the Harpswell Collective!
