Thursday night, curated by Firekeeper Alliance, and featuring locals Radiation Cradle, Senterline, and Pōnōkǎ opened up a portal and unleashed spirits of fire and set the tone for what was to be the most intense FITM weekend yet.

Let’s take it back to Thursday. The opening ceremonies welcomed all to the sacred lands of Red Eagle and lifted the community spirit in a profound and beautiful way. The celebration was led by the Blackfeet Nation and Firekeeper Alliance and documented here by AL Overdrive.

One of the coolest things about FITM is that we get to work with the local community schools and offer internship opportunities to students who participate in the Heavy Music Symposium class at Buffalo Hide Academy led by Charlie Speicher, Colin Sibbernsen, Chris Lewis, Nick Rink, and Cinnamon Salway (with help from many other folks). The program gives real, onsite experience working at a music festival. This was the second year we have had the honor of hosting and we cannot be more proud of all of the students for being part of the FITM story.

Alongside the Blackfeet community and through the mission of Firekeeper Alliance we set out to create a new ceremony. A journey to Red Eagle that is intentional and full of celebration and love. An experience that doesn’t just last through the weekend, but imprints on our hearts and minds for a lifetime.

Looking out at our growing community, the realization is clearer than ever. We are not broken. We are finding our way. And in the midst of head-banging and crying and throwing up horns, we reconnect to one another. And in that reconnection is strength.

Together, we are writing a story…and you are part of this. Every musician, artist, storyteller, knowledge keeper, healer, caretaker, volunteer, teacher, worker, organizer, community leader, attendee, land steward all play a part in this story and community.
