June is for celebrating Pride🩷
The story of Casa Susanna took place in the Catskills in the 1950s and 60s.
I first learned of Casa Susanna in 2015 when I was searching real estate listings for a new home. The second location, Casa Susanna in Jewett NY was for sale $99,000. It was a big old white house that looked stopped in time. There was a vague reference to it being named Casa Susanna. Nothing about it's history.
The house was too big for our needs and needed lots of work, we purchased a smaller home. But the name stuck in my mind. I often drove by the still empty house. It later was renovated and sold for over $1 million. Eventually I researched and found the very moving history of Casa Susanna. It was then that I found the original location in Hunter, as well.
The history and personal stories of those who found comfort and peace there still touches my heart.
We can all be more kind and accepting of each other. Everyone deserves to live their authentic life in peace with freedom and equality.
As an artist, I created a painting "Pride and Joy" in honor of the owners and visitors of Casa Susanna and the LBGTQ community.
It's featured on a purses, fashions, accessories and umbrellas. 🩷
