Making art for several days with an old and trusted artist friend is a revelation. We’ve taken over a house facing the Chesapeake Bay and we’re cranking art while talking, drinking coffee, remembering our much younger selves and laughing often and a lot. Thank you Emily for making this week happen!

Tuesday Morning: before emails and calls and the inertia of the day.
Make something up in Frixion pen: a fantastical weirdo bouquet that lives in your magical head.
Add some washes.
Get in the flow of painting in the spaces you’ve scribbled.
Make changes if you want!
Blow dry on hot and the pen marks disappear.
Keep going: bolder and bolder.
More color if you want it.
More.
More.
More boldness.

Wild Pages
In a four-day immersion in layered painting, memory, and handmade books

September 13-16, 2026
at the Smiley Manse
Springfield, Vermont

Wild Pages is a four-day immersive art retreat where painting, memory, and handmade books come together. Through layered work in watercolor, gouache, ink, and simple printmaking, you’ll create a series of expressive pages inspired by place, home, and your own visual storytelling. Guided prompts, demonstrations, and open studio time help you build depth and rhythm in your work before you bind your painted pages into a one-of-a-kind book with handmade flax covers. Come gather images, experiment boldly, and leave with a finished Wild Pages book that holds your marks, your stories, and your sense of place.

You will Learn
* wet, dry and masking methods for watercolor, gouache and other painting media
* ink transfer printing
* painting and drawing on various types of papers
* how to use semi-transparent vellums to create dynamic page layouts
* how to compose relationships between pages
* pattern-making via carved stamps, drawing, or paint
* color mixing
* various image transfer processes
* use of prompts to observe, simplify, and abstract what you see to the page
* interpret personal photos and maps into meaningful pages
* coptic stitch book binding

“For those who get up, lifting everything with them”
Rini Templeton created thousands of artworks that she gave freely—and without personal attribution—to movements of the oppressed in Mexico and throughout the world. Her work lives on and remains free for use to those who need it to continue to fight ongoing abuse and oppression.

She stood up—and lifted up so much in her lifetime. And there’s so much more lifting up to do!

…and neither are the methods of learning a different language. In my waking in the night I conjugate verbs and attempt to assemble Spanish sentences. The words that rise up in my subconscious are Spanish. It’s like living with constantly unwritten poems or unpainted paintings. It is so so so hard, yet so invigorating. Grateful to grow relationships with our teachers who are now our friends at the Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca.immersion.school

I took a Sketchbook class with Sue and she helped me to see
that I could explore ideas and concepts in a multitude of ways that I had not considered.
It has been transformative in
my practice.
Sue is an enthusiastic instructor. She is kind, knowledgeable,
generous and delightful.

“Memory is like a wayward dog. Sometimes it drops the ball and sometimes it brings it, and sometimes it doesn’t bring a ball at all; it brings a shoe.”
Jess Kidd from Mr Flood’s Last Resort

Memory is a huge player in my studio art-making these days. And when I aim for the dog to bring me the ball, I sometimes get the shoe. And it turns out the shoe is just what I needed.

Snowfall has bleached the color from the world. But color is bold and awake in here and calling me to paint it all over everything.
