big range of emotions from ‘s short OURS. shot on alexa mini with cooke speed panchros.

julie loves improv, close-ups & discovering performance in a docu-style environment, so she pushed us to shoot scenes from unexpected angles and nuanced emotional perspectives — taking time to work with our actors in intimate, focused ways. even though it was sometimes difficult for me in the moment to let go of my lighting and coverage plans (and feel into the improv of the scene), many of those prolonged docu-style takes yielded my favorite frames from the shoot.

thanks and for thinking of clever ways to light while keeping our footprint small.

: i am re-doing my website (don’t go though, it’s not ready yet!!) and combing through old projects; i came across “margaux” and still felt so proud of our work that i had to post. (and spread it across two posts, just to be obnoxious! 😎) i shot this with the brilliant for director in 2016 on the alexa classic with a mixture of super speeds and an angenieux zoom, from clairmont camera (RIP). these are a bunch of our daytime exteriors & interiors. they are set at a very wealthy country club and home (the exterior beauty of which contrasted with the community’s inner ugliness), so we worked to make it feel as soft and pretty as possible — softening the light wherever possible, sending it through quarter grid, and filling in contrast with bounces. gaffed by and colored by the genius . key grip .frames @ Brentwood, Los Angeles

some stills from “ours”, a proof-of-concept mumblecore short shot this summer and directed by , who is wonderful to collaborate with because she focuses on maximizing the strengths of crew and cast members. // for this, julie wanted to keep it simple so it was me, my a7sii, two litemats, and some flags. i did sun readings in the space a few days before the shoot and advised julie about the shooting order so that we could maximize contrast in the space and utilize available light most fully. luckily for me the space had tons of windows which provided plenty of ambient light & a good foundation for the key light; when the light wasn’t direct enough to provide a good key i supplemented with the litemats. added my favorite LUTs and then baked in the oven for 45 min. bone app the teeth! @ Los Feliz

some stills from “paid for in blood”, a short drama directed and produced by that i shot earlier in the summer. production designed by .llz and shot on a RED raven with a skeleton crew.
this project was super low budget so everything you see was shot with available light and then supplemented with a few lite mats, a 2k, and a 1k… amazing what you can do with very little money if you have a good sun tracker app like sunseeker and a little flexibility with your locations.
