High praise for our performance Musical Instrument Museum - MIM!

A patron writes: “I attended the Cultural Cross Roads Dvorak in America concert recently at the MIM in Phoenix. My wife and I enjoyed it immensely. We’ve been to many shows at that venue and put it in our top three. If you know the eclectic acts that pass through there, it is a high mark.”

The Oakland Symphony is performing The Ordering of Moses by R. Nathaniel Dett tonight! We were thrilled to hear the dress rehearsal, featuring bass Kenneth Kellogg, Bass, and percussionist Will Clipman- artists from our Cultural Crossroads: Dvořák in America project.

Tonight’s soloists:

Shawnette Sulker, soprano
Krysty Swann, mezzo-soprano
Terrence Chin-Loy, tenor
Kenneth Kellogg, bass
To celebrate, enjoy this short excerpt from “Go Down, Moses” from our live performance at Dvořák Hall at Eastern Illinois University, featuring Kenneth Kellogg (bass) and Will Clipman (percussion). As Antonín Dvořák said, “Go Down Moses is as great as any Beethoven theme.”

Harry T. Burleigh had a great influence on Dvořák. Today, we celebrate Burleigh's brilliant mother, Elizabeth. She graduated from Avery College in Pittsburgh and delivered the commencement address in both French and English. She returned to Erie and taught at the Wesleyan Methodist Church School, known as the "colored school" at the time. Elizabeth Waters Burleigh also occasionally worked as a maid for the daughter of her husband's employer when she held musical gatherings in her home. Harry occasionally would come along and it was there that he made a life-changing connection with Edward MacDowell's mother, Frances "F***y" Mary Knapp. Happy Mother's Day! Celebrating Chamber Music Month with exciting news! 🎶

We’re honored that Chamber Music America has selected our project to be featured at their upcoming national conference.

Join us as we dive into the world of Dvořák through a project that illuminates the intertwined histories of Black, Native, and European traditions. This session reveals how the program was curated—shaping a cohesive narrative, selecting repertoire, and engaging artists whose lived experiences bring authenticity and depth.

With panelists Pamela Freund-Striplen, Robert Sims, and R. Carlos Nakai, we’ll share how collaboration transformed the program into something far richer than a conventional classical concert, why this work matters, and practical strategies for taking an idea from spark to stage—designing projects that are both artistically compelling and socially meaningful.
