Y’all. There are plants in the ground! But we’ve still got a lot more to go!

Witch hazel. Elderberry. Spicebush. Swamp rose. A magnolia sitting right between two maple trees like it’s always been there.

A parking lot median that nobody has ever looked at twice, and it’s starting to look like a garden.

But Sunday is the big one! No hurricanes or tornados in the forecast!

We’ll be planting rosemary and lavender, bulbs that’ll come up in the spring, large pots of goodies and spreading compost and mulch AND sowing clover as a cover crop.

3p - 6p. Lakewood Shopping Center median. Come for 20 minutes. Come for three hours. Bring your wonderful selves! We’ve got tools, gloves, water. There’s food after. Kids are welcome.

This garden is for the four people who raised Pauli Murray. There’s no statue of any of them anywhere. So we made one out of living things. And on Sunday, you’ll be a part of it! See you out there. 🌱

Thank you to Petaling With Mavis for this post!

From a kitchen table in Miami to the highest court in the land.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, and the first who ever worked as a federal public defender. Born September 14, the same day as Constance Baker Motley, she writes her dissents in plain English, for the rest of us to read.

She sits for life. The people who put her there had to be elected first.

Read all the way down your ballot, that’s where the benches are!

Heads up: planting day moved to SATURDAY. Sunday’s forecast turned on us: 75% rain, so we’re going a day early.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 · 3–6PM
Lakewood Shopping Center median, in front of Bright Black

Last workday, half the folks who signed up made it. Life happens! But Saturday the plants actually go in the ground, and we need a lot more than half.

Come for 20 min or 3 hours. Bring your beautiful selves: tools, gloves, and water are covered. No gardening experience needed. Kids welcome. Food after.

We’re planting a garden for the four people who raised Pauli Murray. There’s no statue of any of them. So we’re making one out of living things. 🤎

Pls send this to/share this with one person!

(We may be back out Sunday for lighter work if the weather allows, but Saturday’s the big one.)

We have our first takeover y’all! We invited Black female lawyers and judges to tell the stories of the women on our SUSTAINED label. Today, we welcome Sydney Owens (sydney owens) to Bright Black to tell you all about Norma Holloway Johnson.

Norma was working to support her family by the age of twelve, in the segregated South. She moved to Washington as a teenager for an education Louisiana would have denied her: taught school by day, studied law at night, and rose all the way to the federal bench. In 1997, she became the first Black woman to serve as Chief Judge of a U.S. District Court, presiding over some of the most powerful people in the country without ever once flinching.

This is the power of the bench y’all! Big thanks to Sydney, and next up — Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson!
