Kidznotes Kidznotes catalyzes social change through tuition-free ensemble music education
to 1-12 students in Durham NC

Inspired by the “El Sistema” model of youth orchestras, Kidznotes catalyzes social change by providing comprehensive music education, leadership opportunities, and character-building experiences free of charge to children with the fewest resources and the greatest need. Students attending Durham Public Schools, Wake County Public Schools and several public charter schools in the North Carolina Triangle area who qualify for federal or reduced lunch are the primary participants in the Kidznotes program. During the 2020-21 school year and in the midst of pandemic, Kidznotes matriculated 279 students in programming from Title I schools in Durham, Southeast Raleigh and East Wake County, with two additional pre-K classes in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City schools.

🎹 Meet the Teaching Artists: Nate Myers!

Music, technology, and a love of teaching come together in Nate’s work! Our Piano Teaching Artist has played since third grade and brings more than 15 years of experience working with young people. 💛

Nate created a music production program at a Raleigh Boys & Girls Club teen center, helping students explore instruments, recording, and audio production. He’s also shared his musical talents with local funk and reggae bands!

Outside the classroom, Nate enjoys golf, reading, family time, and all things Star Wars. Say hello in the comments! ✨

🎻 Meet the Teaching Artists: Elliot Anderson!

At eight years old, Elliot spotted the “big one” in the violin family and was hooked! His musical journey began in a Pittsburgh public school program. Today, he shares his love of the cello with our Kidznotes students. 💛

Along the way, Elliot has performed for Mister Rogers and played in an opening act for Earth, Wind & Fire! Outside of music, he enjoys tending his orchids and garden, caring for his cats, and adding fun stickers to his cello case. Say hello to Elliot in the comments!

🎻 Meet the Teaching Artists: Boyd Gibson!

One violin lesson at sixteen helped shape Boyd’s future. Encouraged by his high school music teacher, he went on to become an educator and composer, sharing his love of music with students from Durham to Kenya and Trinidad. 💛

At Kidznotes, Boyd teaches our Trailblazers Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble, Voyagers String Ensemble, and Upper Strings Sectional. His journey is a reminder of how much a teacher’s encouragement can mean to a young musician.

🎶 Meet the Teaching Artists: Charles Crawford!

Charles believes playing music is for everyone. Some of us just haven’t discovered it yet! 💛

Joining Kidznotes this fall, Charles teaches upper strings for our Explorers and Pioneers and percussion for our Trailblazers. He brings more than a decade of teaching and performing experience, including eight years as an active-duty U.S. Army musician and performances in 14 countries!

Today, he also teaches at Duke School and continues making music with the North Carolina National Guard’s 440th Army Band.

Outside the classroom, Charles enjoys running, cooking, spending time with his family and dogs, and adding to his orchestral record collection. 🎵

Help us welcome Charles as he shares a world of musical experience with our students!

🎹 Meet the Teaching Artists: Ramón Brito!

For Ramón, music has always been a family affair. Growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, he was surrounded by parents and relatives who played instruments and encouraged him to discover music from an early age. This fall, he joined Kidznotes as a Piano Teaching Artist, sharing that lifelong connection with a new generation of musicians. 💛

Ramón has served on Elon University’s music faculty since 2006 and teaches from his piano studio in south Durham. From local choirs to chamber ensembles and jazz musicians, he loves making music with others!

Away from the piano, you might find him hiking, kayaking, or practicing archery. He’s even a certified archery instructor! 🏹

Para Ramón, la música siempre ha sido parte de la familia. Creció en Caracas, Venezuela, rodeado de padres y familiares que tocaban instrumentos y lo animaron a descubrir la música desde pequeño. Este otoño se unió a Kidznotes como maestro de piano para compartir ese vínculo de toda la vida con una nueva generación de músicos. 💛

Ramón es profesor de música en Elon University desde 2006 y también enseña piano en su estudio en el sur de Durham. ¡Disfruta hacer música con coros locales, grupos de cámara y músicos de jazz!

Cuando no está al piano, le encanta hacer senderismo, navegar en kayak y practicar tiro con arco. ¡También es instructor certificado de tiro con arco! 🏹

🎶 Meet the Teaching Artists: Carson Mooring!

For Carson, music is about the joy and community it creates. 💛 A vocalist and music educator who grew up in Orange County, NC, she helps students discover their abilities and build the confidence to share them.

Her approach makes room for trying something new, making mistakes, and celebrating progress. That’s how young musicians learn to trust themselves and keep growing!

Outside the classroom, Carson loves painting, crafting, baking, and walking her dogs. One adventurous fun fact? She’s been skydiving! Join us in welcoming Carson to the Kidznotes community! 👋

🥁 Meet the Teaching Artists: Alexsandra Frias!

Rhythm, movement, and a joyful sense of community are at the heart of Alexsandra’s teaching! Known as Mestra Tigresa, she brings her Brazilian roots and decades of experience in Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian percussion to her work with young musicians. 💛

At Kidznotes, Alexsandra teaches Bucket Band/Drumming for our Pioneers and Explorers. With patience, encouragement, and humor, she helps students build confidence, create together, and connect with the cultural traditions behind the rhythms.
