SEEDS Durham, NC Founded in 1994, SEEDS is a two-acre urban garden and kitchen classroom in the heart of Durham, NC.

While we were founded over 30 years ago, we joined Facebook in 2026 - bear with us as we build out this space - great things to come!

As we watch the rain pass through, we are recalling last year when a storm damaged our flower hoop house. SEEDS has two hoop houses on site - one where we have grown vegetables and herbs, and another where we have grown flowers.

This year, the damaged hoop house was not intentionally planted, but the flowers grew back all the same. These volunteer plants - a legacy of dropped seeds - have given us an accidental bounty of flowers.

While recent chills and rain have knocked most of this year's flowers back, we should still have a few more early next week for anybody who might want to stop by and pick a handful.

Hopefully after that we will begin working on completing the needed repairs, replacing the cover, and prepping the ground for a batch of flowers to cut this spring.

🌱✨ From DIG Intern to Research Scientist in the Making! ✨🌱

We love seeing where our SEEDS community members grow after their time in the garden. DIG intern alumni, Camille, recently reached out with an exciting update from her research biology course.

Camille is participating in a project that involves sampling soil from areas rich in vegetation to identify and potentially publish new bacteriophages, viruses that help scientists better understand microbial ecosystems. Because of SEEDS' long history, diverse plant life, and native habitats, she selected our garden as one of her sampling sites.

As a passionate gardener, scientist, and community advocate, Camille has always been curious about the connections between people, plants, and the environment. We're thrilled that her academic journey has brought her back to SEEDS and can't wait to hear what she discovers.

Who knows? The next scientific discovery could start with a handful of soil from a community garden. 🌿🔬

Good luck, Camille, and thank you for continuing to grow with us! We can't wait to see what you discover!

It's tough to claim that Fall is in the air when the temperature is flirting with the 90s, especially when the year's first sightings of festive flavors have been a refreshing pumpkin spice pop at Locopops or an iced pumpkin spice latte at Museum of Life and Science, but we're saying it. It's coming!

In our case, we are watching it approach with the fading of our late summer flowers, the greying of our preying mantises, and the arrival of a copious deluge of pecans from our giant tree.

Right now, we have so many pecans on the ground it's tough to collect them all, and many if not most are being left to the squirrels. Honestly, we are largely outsourcing the job to some diminutive visitors, whose enthusiasm tends to wane far before the cleanup is complete.

This doesn't stop us from pre-spending our pecan bounty in our heads, and we are enjoying dreaming of pies and warm spices and all of the cozy things...

Happy Friday! Today we are giving thanks to local artists Soto Contreras and Figueroa Lisbeth! This dynamic duo has helped us brighten up a couple of long neglected walls at our office, and painted this beautiful new mural. Come check it out in person tomorrow from 10-12 or at one of our other upcoming Open Garden / Volunteer days (more info here https://www.seedsnc.org/events).

To be clear, while we have plenty of jobs available for people looking to get dirty and channel some rage, we also have opportunities for volunteers who might just want to hang out indoors assembling furniture. Come as you are!

We also welcome visitors during our Open Gardens, so if you want to come check us out and not lift a finger, we're here for you. Bring a picnic - we have plenty of tables where you can sit!

While this summer heat is taking its last few gasps, we have been nearing the end of the harvest for our tomato crop, and what better to pair with tomatoes than a fistful of fresh basil?

Unfortunately, avoiding pesticide use makes it tough for us to fight off the whiteflies that delight in our bounty, and many of our basil plants have curling or yellowed leaves - a telltale sign of whitefly abuse.

Although there are other natural options, last week we decided to try out a batch of natural whitefly predators - the ladybug! Let me tell you, the sensation of 1,500 friendly insects crawling out of a bag and onto your hand is reason enough to try out this strategy, and as of today at least some of them are clearly lurking around looking to do some good work.

We are curious if anybody else has tried this method, and whether it has been helpful?

If nothing else, we remain infinitely impressed by the things that can be ordered on the internet. Stop by and give our ladybugs some congratulations for their good work!
