Bring your poetry, prose, or creative ideas and carve them on bamboo! The highly debated colonial history of whether pre-colonial Filipino literatures were burned by Spanish priests is masked by the perception that our knowledge was perishable. Hmmm. Wanna discuss this with us on a Sunday afternoon? Gothic Baybayin is a facet of the ever-evolving Filipino identity. It is my way of honoring our Filipino script that I learned in the United States, while weaving in the Gothic calligraphy my dad learned growing up in the Philippines. Bringing together a pre-colonial script and a Western one reflects the cultural hybridity that shapes my understanding of Filipino identity. It allows me to celebrate the legacy of indigenous knowledge while acknowledging how elements introduced by colonizers have since become inseparable from contemporary Filipino culture.

Join us for a 1.5-hour virtual workshop exploring Tagalog words through their Baybayin meanings. Tagalog is one of the many languages spoken in the Philippines, and Filipinos historically used Baybayin, an Indigenous script widely used before and during the early colonial period.

This unique workshop introduces Tagalog words that reveal deeper, poetic meanings when explored through their Baybayin characters. Together, we’ll look beyond the written word to uncover connections between language, symbolism, and Filipino ancestral knowledge.

Join us for a fun and hands-on Papermaking Workshop just outside The Bean Flower Cafe, Durham! Whether you’re a beginner or just looking to try something new, this is the perfect chance to learn how to identify plants, process fibers into pulp, and make your own unique paper. Teaching artist, Angaea Cuna, will provide a buffet of pulps fibers, moulds and deckles, and decorative materials for participants. At the end of the session, participants get to take their paper home with them!
