Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) is a nonviolent Palestinian-led movement promoting boycotts, divestments, and economic sanctions against Israel.

While the mechanics of the movement are economic, its heart is deeply cultural, transforming the act of shopping into a profound global conversation about human rights. BDS isn’t just about what you buy; it’s about the stories we tell and the institutions we support.

The success of BDS lies in its ability to make the invisible visible. It reminds us that our capital—and our creative output—is a form of energy. When we withdraw that energy from systems of oppression, we aren’t just ā€œunshoppingā€; we are participating in a global act of solidarity.

A DIRTier life is a happier life, I always say (I’ve in fact, never said this… but I think it’s time to start). Everywhere we look, concrete is covering what used to be soil, and we’re missing out. I recently read an article from Imagine5 about how to get more dirt in your life, and it was so inspiring, I had to share their tips. Swipe through the slides to see how to get delightfully dirty this spring.Ā

1. Adopt a plantĀ
2. Repot cooking herbs
3. Grow food in your backyard (this is easier than you might think, by the way!)
4. Get out into nature
5. Go food picking, or try foraging (safely…)
6. Get involved in a community gardenĀ
7. Invent new ways to get your fingers dirty (anyone want to go picnic, pinecone hunting, or to floral arrangement class?)Ā

ā€¼ļø ART AS RESISTANCE ā€¼ļø has taken on a new form as AI is quickly transforming the landscape of creation. The tension between human creators and the bots has sparked a new era of digital labor resistance. If you’re looking to join in, here are two key risks posed to artists that you should know about:

STYLE MIMICRY:

Generative AI models (like Stable Diffusion or Midjourney) have begun studying small sets of artists’ work and reproducing their specific style to create new images without consent, and without compensation. Not only does it dilute an artist’s brand when large quantities of lower-quality images in the same style are produced and distributed, it also threatens the career stability of artists everywhere.

Potential Solution(s): The Glaze Project (including Glaze, Nightshade, WebGlaze and others) is a research effort that develops technical tools with the explicit goal of protecting human creatives against invasive uses of GenAI. Learn more at glaze.cs.uchicago.edu

FUNCTIONAL DESKILLING:

Functional deskilling (as it pertains to art) refers to artists becoming overreliant on the use of AI for time-saving tasks and–in the process–losing traditional skills that are foundational to artistic knowledge and creation.

Potential Solution(s): Spend time each week upskilling a task, taking your time on the development of an idea without the use of technology, or learning something new from a fellow artist.

Be human. Be imperfect. Resist like an artist.

Do you need a lifesaver? I often (ok, always) do. And I think it might be art.

Dr. Daisy Fancourt, who spent more than 15 years researching art as a form of medicine, found something that astonished her: scientific evidence that art can improve health, stave off illness and disease, and help people live longer, more fulfilling lives.

Visit the link in my bio to read the article, and consider trying these whimsical artistic enjoyments this spring:

• Write a poem (don’t stress about it being ā€œgoodā€ - just observe and write)
• Go to a local concert
• Make mini sculptures (scroll down my reels to learn how to make your own clay from scrap paper)
• Host an ā€œart galleryā€ night (where each attendee brings one piece of art that brings them joy)

To y(our) good health!

This wild world.Ā

This jaw-dropping, show-stopping place.Ā

This home of ours.Ā

This place that privileges us with meandering streams, towering mountains, and every color in existence to see and capture and gather inspiration from.Ā

It’s warming, and it’s happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years.Ā

Please fight for her.Ā

🌱🌸 I was able to purchase an etching press with a small equipment grant from ArtLifting this past year, and I’ve been giving myself permission to both practice and play.

I’m so impressed with how much more consistently I can print, without nearly as much physical effort as my manual press required! I can’t wait to continue to evolve this practice. What’s one practice you’re evolving this spring?

I’m honored to announce that I am now officially an ArtLifting artist. ArtLifting champions artists with disabilities to design meaningful spaces, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of the work they’re doing throughout the country. Visit the link in my bio to learn more about ArtLifting and to see my artworks available there, and swipe through the slides to read a few takeaways from my conversation with the ArtLifting team.
