Swearing and s*x on screen were considered so racy in 1967 that men and women were segregated while watching a controversial new film, Ulysses.

The movie was an adaptation of Irish writer James Joyce's 1922 novel of the same name, which was banned in Britain for nearly a decade. The 1967 film was heavily censored in Britain, and not released at all in Ireland until 2000. Of particular concern to censors was a single instance of the f-word, and a description of oral s*x by one character.http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/70933727/movie-s*x-segregation-for-racy-1967-film-ulysses--150-years-of-news

One f-word was enough to shock movie censors into s*x segregation in 1967 Wellington.

"As we know now, the novel’s greatest transgressions were not against decency and morality but against the forms and conventions of fiction writing itself. The entire action of “Ulysses” takes place in a single day, skipping from character to character in seemingly no particular order. Stylistically, the book mingles high and low, poetry and banality, profundity and cliché. There are moments described from inside a character’s head, as well as stretches of pastiche and parody; burlesque chapters; a chapter in play form and one that’s a mock catechism; and even some sections that come close to gibberish. After reading the Sirens section — the one that begins: “Bronze by gold heard the hoofirons, steelyrining imperthnthn thnthnthn” — Ezra Pound worried that Joyce might have “got knocked on the head."

When James Joyce’s novel was first published in 1922, it was banned for obscenity and the U.S. Postal Service burned copies.

Alfred Henry Hunter is the Dubliner long known to be the model for the hero of Joyce’s Ulysses, Leopold Bloom. In 1904, after rescuing Joyce from a drunken fight, Hunter took him home and showed him a paternal sympathy that resonated deeply with Joyce, who originally planned Ulysses as a short story. It expanded between 1914 and 1922, and the figure at its centre changed from the kindly Hunter to the Everyman Bloom. In 1890, Hunter even registered a patent of an invention “for facilitating the unlacing of boots and shoes and corsets and such like”, as reported in The Weekly Irish Times of November 14 1890.http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/heritage/irish-roots-bloomier-and-bloomier-1.2229649
