Do you ever look at visual art and think it feels almost musical 🎶 🖼️? You’re not wrong! Take these pieces from Professor Amy Wendland’s 2D Design classes. Amy played songs she knew were likely to be unfamiliar, and students doodled while listening. Afterward, they selected one of their doodles to refine, tessellate, and repeat 16 times to form a pattern. The use of color harmonies augmented the feeling of visual rhythm. The result? Beautiful music!

Artists in order pictured are Mason Kaskela, Ruby Romero, Nathan Martin, Imi Gross, Jo Vallecorsa-Campo, Alan Villalobos, Aria Reyes, Sammie Shapiro, Tristan Dickey, and Achilles Silas.

Student social media assistant Tyler Suazo recently shared images of Professor Tony Holmquist’s Printmaking class, where they’ve been making reductive relief prints. Reductive reliefs involve successively removing parts of a wood or linoleum block in order to print different colors. Getting it right requires careful planning!

Pictured in order are Amelia showing off a design, Henry performing an image transfer, Ginger measuring artwork, and Tony himself explaining how to use fixative on a successful transfer. We can’t wait to see the final results, everyone! 🤩

Things got wonderfully weird in Professor Jay Dougan’s 3D Design class when students made thumb tacks… literally. Each student dipped their thumb in wax, carefully wiggled off the hardened shell, and poured rubber into the cavity. Once the rubber cured, they glued in points so the “thumbs” function like pushpins. It’s one part kitsch, one part serial killer, and 100% awesome! Talk about the perfect way to refresh some playful energy at the end of the semester!

Of course… there’s only one proper emoji for this... 👍👍👍

👽?!? Or are we just getting punchy from lots of hours at the 3D printer?
