We sat down with Julie Dean Hughes of Ski Girl Design, Studio #2 at the ArtRoom Collective, to learn more about her creative journey—from a lifelong love of art, to a 27-year career in graphic design and art direction, to her current focus on watercolor, mixed media, and wearable art.

Inspired by nature, family adventures, and life in Durango, Julie’s work reflects both creativity and connection to the outdoors. From watercolor hummingbirds to handcrafted earrings and cyanotype experiments, she’s constantly exploring new ways to create.

Stop by Studio #2 to see her latest work including original watercolors, prints, notecards, wood block paintings, and earrings.

✨ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Val, The Flying Hatter ✨
Studio # 15 | The ArtRoom Collective

Meet the milliner behind the magic.

The Flying Hatter creates sculptural fiber art in the form of bold, funky millinery — hats inspired by New Orleans spirit, Fashion Week edge, and the energy of great cities.

Her journey began in childhood, sewing beside her grandmother — an unrealized artist and her very first teacher. That early foundation led her to earn a BFA from the University of Colorado Boulder and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, refining a lifelong love of fiber into the art of hat making.

✨ Inspired by: Fashion Week & cities
✨ Creating since: Childhood
✨ Favorite time to work: Golden hour — when the studio clears out and it’s just her and the light
✨ Most adventurous thing she’s done? “Be an artist.”

When she’s not crafting next season’s favorite hat, you can find her doing aerial acrobatics or chasing incredible food.

Meet Diane, with over 23 years of jewelry-making, Diane’s beaded and wire-wrapped designs are inspired by nature, movement, and a lifelong love of learning.

When she’s not in the studio, you’ll likely find her mountain biking local trails or coaching women and girls on their rides—often sparking new design ideas along the way.

From local stones gathered on trail adventures to hand-stamped details, her work is as thoughtful as it is beautiful.
