Painting is ALL about trusting the process.

Trusting that I got the drawing right. Trusting that I’ll notice the things that will draw the viewer in. Trusting that I don’t accidentally drop paint where it’s not supposed to be. Trusting that I can get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

I’ve had to learn to trust my instincts.

I tend to paint in the eyes on pet portraits, a bit later than I would expect other people to. I’m so drawn into an animals eyes that I can kind of forget about important other details. Learning to trust this method has been so important, because the eyes are such an important part of making the portraits feel alive and have personality. Before they’re painted in (and honestly finished) the paintings look insane.

I’ve learned a million and one methods and techniques that I rely on, but they only came out of going through the process and trusting my instincts.

When I decided to do Pet Pawtrait Madness, I was going to be thrilled if I got to paint 5-10 pet portraits. It’s something I’ve done for a long time, but I haven’t put it at the forefront of my business so I wasn’t sure how people would respond to it. My artwork leans Western, (mostly because of subject matter) so I was worried that people wouldn’t care or even get confused. All the types of painting I do makes totally perfect sense to me, but I think from the outside it can take a minute to understand how a girl can paint western landscapes and pet portraits and have it make sense.

I’m still tallying up the numbers, but when I’ve finished the portraits, (hopefully in the next few weeks!) I’ll have painted almost 40 animals. I have read so many stories about these guys, and my phone is basically a gallery for strangers pets. I don’t mind it one bit, but it always amazes me how well things can work out sometimes.

Thank you for everyone who’s been patient. The wait is worth it. And we’re saving dogs in the process. I’ll share a bunch of slides with more numbers but just know we made a big impact. Thank you for your trust in me!

I never dreamed I’d be able to make art full time. I always thought it was just a thing I’d get to do because it was fun but my job would be the thing to support the rest of my life. But I realized that would never work for me long term. I kept burning out at my jobs and lost my creativity for long periods of time. But since I’ve been doing this full time (almost a whole year now!!!) I’ve had a creative spark. It hasn’t seemed to go away. I’m sure it will ebb and flow but I feel like it’s been the sign that has really validated that being a creative is what I’m meant to be and do.

This video shows some in progress shots of pet portraits I completed for the fundraiser in the month of March! Don’t worry, I have more to share on that front! It was a raging success (way more than I expected!) and I just feel so grateful.

I still have a few slots available for pet portraits that can be completed and mailed before Mother’s Day! If you’re interested, shoot me a DM or fill out the form at the link in my bio! I’ve absolutely loved having more pet portraits to paint recently and definitely want to keep doing them!!

Sometimes, paintings take a long long time to be born.

This painting was commissioned from a dear friend almost two years ago (if I remember correctly.) He told me he wanted a special painting to surprise his amazing partner of her favorite place. He gave me beautiful instructions and told me to paint it when I had the time. (Dangerous for folks like me.) I have thought about this painting many times over that time always wondering when “I’d have time” but I think really I was asking “when will the inspiration strike?” I put so much pressure on myself to make sure it was perfect and everything they could imagine.

Ultimately it came down to getting out of my own way. It may have taken two years but it came out exactly as it was meant to. I am so proud of this painting and so grateful it will live in the home of my dear friends.

If you’re interested in a commission, I promise it won’t take 2 years. (Probably more like 4-6 weeks! 😂) But I am always happy to chat about any commissions you’ve envisioned! And making those paintings come to life.

What a whirlwind March has been. Between running a fundraiser for , fostering a dog for them (MISTY - who’s available for adoption!!!) and trying to live life - it’s been a wild ride. But I couldn’t be more grateful for this life I get to live. It’s incredible.

Just a reminder that TOMORROW is the last day to get your orders in for Pawtrait Madness!!! All profits from the sale of custom painted pet portraits in the month of March go to Arctic Rescue!

Here are just a few of the testimonials I’ve received from past pet portraits. I am so grateful that people entrust me to put their pets personality to paper and create a keepsake that reminds them of their favorite family members for long after they’ve left us.

Whether you’re looking for a gift, looking to memorialize a pet that is with us or has passed on, or just want to give yourself something a little extra special - I can make that happen for you! Remember - I don’t just paint dogs and cats! I will paint any pet that you love.

All profits from the sale of pet portraits in the month of March will go directly to Arctic Rescue! They are an amazing rescue that rescues northern breed dogs and finds them the most incredible homes.

We are given gifts. Things that we don’t expect or even plan for. Things that tend to turn our lives upside down or consequently turn them right side up again. These are things that may be very small, or very large. Sometimes they find us in fleeting moments, but other times they are big decisions and sometimes, I think they are probably both.

At some point, we all come ask ourselves “how much can one heart take?” When things get hard, when we think we are at the end of our rope, or alternatively when we feel like we are about to burst with the love we contain inside of us, we ask ourselves “how much more must we handle?” It is in these moments that we recognize these gifts that we were given.

These gifts often are things that don’t last forever. When it’s an object, it can get lost or broken or disintegrate back to the Earth. When this thing is a life, it follows a natural cycle.

He is my gift. Physically or not, he is and always will be near. When I ask myself, how much can one heart take? I look to him for the answer.

I’ll share a bit more later this week, but his pet portrait was commissioned by someone who is very special to both of us. Who gave us the greatest gifts of our lives. But first, I just want to celebrate the joy of having him in my life
