THOM ROSS
"Curly Headed Doctor & the Magic Tule Rope"

Acrylic | 40" x 60"; 42" x 62" Framed
Modoc lava beds - Northern California - 1872

As the US Army moved against a small band of Modoc Indians (about 50 men and 120 women & children) the Modoc shaman, Curly Headed Doctor, made a long rope out of tule reeds. He then painted it red and laid it around a section in the lava rocks where they were hiding and proclaimed that not a soldier would ever cross the magic tule rope.

In the first engagement of the war his magic held true and not a single soldier even came near their hideout amongst the lava caves.

However, eventually the soldiers did cross the tule rope and Curly Headed Doctor was "defrocked".

He survived the war (1872 - 1873) dying in 1890. On the day of his death in Quapaw, Oklahoma (where the recalcitrant Modocs and been moved to) the trees began to fill with thousands of pigeons and Curly Headed Doctor told the people not to shoot them as they were spirits who had come to take him away.

Although the Modoc had been Christianized Curly Headed Doctor asked that they cremate him. This they did and a Modoc woman named, Jennie gave an account on how the flames went soaring into the sky and turned many different and vivid colors, something that the Modoc witnesses had never seen before.

The man in the photograph is Curly Headed Doctor.

STEVE HASTINGS
“Lush Life” | 60”x 48” | Oil

The images of desert flowers and blooming cacti speak to him. Hastings says his work is Magical Realism–A reminder of the enchantment and ominousness of the everyday, nestled inside art and literature. He paints the natural world but with elements of surrealism and dreams in the finished product. It’s a cactus and a cloud, but something else is happening.

“When I paint things I know I did it but I don’t always remember how I did it. It tells me how to mix the colors. I don’t write it down. They are like happenings they happen to me. When I flow it turns off the default mode network which is the ego. It’s like making love, you’re ego goes away and you two become one thing, and then you come back. The essence is watching. If you let the love out you’ll be amazed.”

“Creating and exploring the works of other civilizations became a growing passion I couldn’t ignore.” - Loren Nicole

Loren Nicole is a Los Angeles-based jewelry company started by goldsmith Loren Teetelli who creates extraordinary 22-karat gold handmade jewelry inspired by the techniques and motifs of ancient cultures. She found her talent for jewelry after working as an archaeologist and a conservator at the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York. To better understand the objects she was conserving, Teetelli turned to metalsmithing classes and found a passion for creating.

While never undergoing formal training, Teetelli has sought-out masters of specialized techniques not widely practiced today and has explored ancient metalsmithing on her own guided by an extensive library and appreciation for objects. Teetelli employs her knowledge of ancient civilizations, attention to minute details, and talent for creating rare and beautiful jewelry pieces that will be treasured for centuries to come.

EDWARD ALDRICH
"Valley Clouds"
20" x 40" | Oil

In his sophisticated portraits, Edward Aldrich is dedicated to reaching beyond the realistic rendering of wildlife in wild places, conveying the inherent being of an animal. His goal as an artist is to keep exploring the concept of putting life into his paintings - invoking the thrill of witnessing a cougar or wolf in the wild.
