Our friend says it better than we could…❤️

There are superstars, and then there was Dolly Parton.

I’m not sure we’ve ever had another person who belonged so completely to every generation at the same time.

Your great grandparents knew Dolly.

Your grandparents knew Dolly.

Your mama knew Dolly.

You knew Dolly.

And somewhere right now there’s a six year old kid who knows exactly who Dolly Parton is.

That is a mighty rare thing.

She came out of the mountains of East Tennessee, one of twelve children in a family that didn’t have much money but apparently had enough love, faith, music and stubbornness to send one of their own clear around the world.

And she never acted like she’d escaped any of it.

That may be the most remarkable part.

Dolly became about as famous as a human being can become. Records, movies, television, Dollywood, rhinestones, big hair, bigger songs and enough awards to require somebody to reinforce a shelf.

But somehow, underneath all of it, she remained Dolly.

Funny. Gracious. Self deprecating. Kind.

Classy without ever being stuffy.

Beautiful in the obvious ways and even more beautiful in the ones that mattered.

She could write “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” songs that somehow never got old because the things she wrote about never got old either. Love. Wanting. Leaving. Home. Being poor. Being proud. Holding on and letting go.

And then, after giving the world all those songs, she decided children needed books too.

Her Imagination Library started back home in East Tennessee because her own daddy couldn’t read, and it grew into something that has put books into the hands of millions of children. Little kids who may never own a rhinestone anything still knew Dolly because every month a book showed up with their name on it.

That tells you more about a person than any trophy ever could.

Dolly spent a lifetime proving you could come from almost nothing without ever being ashamed of where you came from. You could become rich without becoming impressed with yourself. You could be glamorous without becoming shallow. You could be famous without becoming cruel.

And you could make the whole world a little brighter without demanding everybody agree with you first.

Rarely has one person meant so much to so many people who had so little else in common.

Country folks loved her.

City folks loved her.

Old folks loved her.

Young folks loved her.

People who wouldn’t agree on what kind of mayonnaise belongs in the refrigerator could somehow agree on Dolly Parton.

Maybe that was her greatest trick.

Her light has moved on now.

But Lord knows she left enough of it behind for the rest of us.

In the songs.

In those mountains.

In millions of books sitting beside little beds.

And in several generations of people who got to live in a world with Dolly Parton in it.

We were mighty lucky.
