Have you ever heard the term banking the stove? It is something old-timers did back in the day, before we had electric or gas stoves to cook on. To make it easier to start the fire the next day, they banked the stove. Banking a stove means packing its firebox with fuel and restricting airflow so the fire smolders slowly overnight, keeping hot coals alive to easily restart the fire the next morning. You would do that by raking the red-hot coals into a pile and covering them with a blanket of ash for insulation. Do it right, and you would have hot coals to easily start the fire the next morning.

That’s good advice for a wood stove, but it is also great advice for Christians today. We need to make sure our relationship with the Lord stays hot so we can serve Him faithfully. Without protecting our relationship with the Lord through prayer and reading God’s Word, it can begin to cool down. Then, when we need to be on fire for the Lord, we may find ourselves in trouble. In banking a stove, you put ashes over the coals. Our blanket of protection is the Holy Spirit, who, if we allow Him, will keep our coals hot for the Lord. Are you starting to cool down in your relationship with the Lord? Just call out to Him, and He will set you on fire for Him once again.

Leviticus 6:13 Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out.

Psalm 39:3 My heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:

Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Romans 12:11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.

What is life? For most, it seems to be birth, childhood, and the search for special events like a driver’s license or that first date. It includes getting an education, college experiences, that first real job, falling in love, getting married, children, grandchildren, and the constant quest for things like a car, a house, clothes, and vacations. All of that can be lived, yet it can be a life wasted if one does not know the Lord or pass that truth to the next generation.

On average, the current life span in the United States is 79 years. Remove about 26 years for sleep, and that leaves about 52 years on earth. Yet in reality, those 52 years are to our life as a drop of water in the ocean, even less. You see, we live forever. This short time we have has one main priority: get saved and help as many others as possible get saved. It’s not about things, accomplishments, or even family, because without God it means eternity in a very bad place. If we realized this, there would be far more sharing of faith. Life Way statistics state that 61% of Christians never share their faith. What are we living for? Are we living for things that are temporary, giving little thought to the eternal? Since just a tiny, tiny part of our life is spent on earth, would it not be wise to prepare for where we will spend eternity and make every effort so our loved ones and all others have the opportunity to make the most important decision in their life?

Does that mean we cannot enjoy the blessings of life? Of course not, but our time here is not for getting all we can get, but rather for giving all we can give… the gospel.

James 4:14 Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

Ephesians 5:15-17 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Congratulations to Chosen Road!!!!

There are five guys in this picture. But there are so many more people responsible for what’s in our hands.

And I never want to forget that.

This Dove Award represents years of prayer, sacrifice, hard work, and the support of people who believed in us when there wasn’t much reason to. Family, friends, songwriters, producers, engineers, publicists, and the entire Daywind Records family — we are deeply grateful for every one of you.

Tim Meeker, thank you for giving me my first real job in music and for continuing to keep us moving down the road all these years later. You’re family, and I love you, buddy.

Dave Clark, this album was your idea, and I’m so thankful you agreed to produce it. You believed in Chosen Road early on, and your friendship means more than I can say.

Emily Dade Kohl, thank you for championing our story and working tirelessly to help others see what you’ve always seen in us. You’re not just helping tell our story—you’re part of it.
