Texting is great and all, but how about sitting on the dock together?

Messages like these mean the world to me.

Bodies of water have a way of becoming a part of our stories; Places of comfort, rest, renewal. I am grateful I get to guide the pigment, ink, and water, creating daily reminders of those parts of our stories.

These sweet little framed art prints are perfect for a nightstand or side table. You’ll have to snag one of these at the next in-person event as they aren’t on my website and sell out quickly. I always bring some framed minis of Lake Superior and one other local lake.

I forgot to bring these to Art-A-Whirl and had my sister drop them off at 5pm on Saturday and they still sold out because you all love your lakes! 💙

When I say I paint lakes, this is what I mean.

Meet the Artist…

💙 My name is Catherine and I am the artist and owner of Lake Paintings. I use watercolor, ink, and collected lake water to depict the bathymetry, the depths and shapes of underwater terrain, of our beloved lakes.

✨ I was born in the Upper Peninsula near the shores of Lake Superior. I spent my childhood and college years in Chicago, camping at the Indiana Dunes and frolicking around Chicago. I have lived in Minneapolis for over twenty years now. I have walked countless Minnesota shores, holding many things: my husband’s hand, the back of my kids’ bicycles, coffees shared with friends, the emptiness of unanswered questions, the dog’s leash, and thousands of leaves, flowers and stones. I was an art teacher for 19 years and cherished a million moments with my students. While teaching, I began dedicating time to botanical art studies. When my husband’s parents bought a lake home in 2017 I took my watercolor and ink skills and began painting the lakes, first for their living room, then for myself, then for others. Lake Paintings was born.

🌱 Lake Paintings slowly grew from a few paintings mixed among my work at an Art-A-Whirl tent in Minneapolis to a small business with a website, a dedicated space, and even displays at a few stores. By May of 2024, I knew I wanted a different balance in my life, so I made the bittersweet, but exciting, choice to pack up my art classroom, rent a studio, and focus all of my energy into the life of a full-time studio artist. I brought my supportive husband, Ming-Jinn, my three teenage kids, and now you all along for the ride.

💕 Thank you for joining me! Maybe, like me, a lake or two has drawn you in, been present with you, shaped you in some way. It is our shared love of the waters that connects us all in this space. I am grateful you are here.
