⚠️ Reminder ⚠️ Your New Reptile’s First Night 🏠
The ride home is over—now the real work begins! The first few days are the most critical for your new pet's long-term health and stress levels.
1️⃣ The "Look but Don’t Touch" Rule
It is incredibly tempting to show off your new friend to everyone, but handling is the #1 cause of stress-related illness in new arrivals. The Goal: Get them into their enclosure and walk away.
The Timeline: No handling for at least 7–10 days, or until they have successfully eaten 2–3 meals for you.
2️⃣ Quarantine is Mandatory
If you have other reptiles at home, your new addition should be kept in a separate room if possible.
Setup tip: Depending on the species, you can use a simple "clinical" setup (paper towels, plastic hides, water bowl). Why? Paper towels allow you to easily monitor for abnormal droppings.
Hygiene: Always wash your hands or change clothes after touching the new animal before going near your established collection.
3️⃣ Hydration First, Food Second
Travel is dehydrating! Ensure a fresh, shallow water bowl is immediately available. For tropical species, give the enclosure a good misting to spike humidity.
Skip the Meal: For snakes, or species that don't need daily meals, do not offer food for the first 24–48 hours. Digestion requires energy and stable heat; a stressed animal is much more likely to regurgitate their first meal.
4️⃣ Dial in the "Hot Spot"
Check your temperatures one last time with a digital probe or infrared temp gun.
The Gradient: Ensure the animal can move completely away from the heat source to a "cool side." Security: If your reptile is glass-surfing or acting flighty, try covering three sides of the tank with dark paper or a towel. Privacy = Security!
📝 The First Week Checklist:
Night 1: Settle in, lights off, zero interaction.
Day 2: Visual check only. Monitor temps/humidity.
Day 3: Offer a small meal (if the species is established).
Day 7+: If eating and acting normal, begin very short (5-min) handling sessions.
Pro Tip: Keep a "Reptile Diary." Note down their first p**p, their first meal, and their weight. This information is gold if you ever need to visit a vet!

💡 We are thrilled to highlight a true titan of the reptile industry: Zoo Med Laboratories!

Since 1977, Zoo Med has been the pioneer of modern reptile husbandry. From inventing the very first UVB lamp for reptiles in 1993 to developing the iconic ReptiVite™ vitamins, they have spent over 45 years ensuring our scaly friends thrive in captivity.

Why Zoo Med is the Industry Standard:

Innovation First: They hold over 30 patents and are world-renowned experts in UVB and heat lighting.

Tested by Hobbyists: Their products aren't just made in a lab—they are tested on the 90+ species housed at their California headquarters!

Everything You Need: From the classic ReptiSun® bulbs and Habba Huts to their advanced Naturalistic Terrariums, they provide the tools for every level of the hobby.

Community & Conservation: Zoo Med is a massive supporter of USARK and dozens of turtle and tortoise conservation groups.

Whether you’re setting up your first bearded dragon kit or managing a professional breeding facility, Zoo Med has been "saving your reptiles" for nearly half a century.

A huge thank you to Zoo Med for their support of the Southeast Reptile Expo!
