"Boreal Blaze" (2026)

There is a brief, breathtaking moment when the Northwoods forgets its coming slumber and catches fire instead. Before the long white silence of winter settles over the ridges, the Maples stage a final, defiant rebellion against the cooling sun. They don’t merely change color; they ignite, turning the forest into a cathedral of flickering light and shadow.
It is the forest’s last grand gesture: a momentary, brilliant exhale before the first frost claims the canopy and returns the woods to silence.

It is a fleeting transmutation where the green of summer is burned away, leaving behind a rhythmic 'thread' of suspended gold. It is the forest’s final, shimmering breath—a sacred distillation of color and air that holds its place for one brief moment before the gold returns to the earth.

FALL FESTIVAL SCHEDULE

The 2026 Fall Festival Schedule for Up North Studio will kickoff in September this year instead of August due to the unfortunate and disappointing loss of one of Duluth's premier art festivals, Art in Bayfront Park, which was an annual event for Up North Studio.

During the month of August, select artwork will be on exhibit at the Grand Marais Art Colony, Studio 21, a joint exhibition with Mary Stafford entitled "The Stillness and the Stirring".

Please join us in September for the Chester Bowl Fall Fest on the 19th in Duluth, and for the Lake Superior 20/20 Studio Art Tour on the following weekend, September 25th thru the 27th, in Two Harbors.

Further announcements regarding additional shows will be made soon. Up North Studio is in the process of evaluating future potential venues for 2027. Please stay tuned!

True strength in nature is rarely a single, blunt force; it is a balance of opposites. Down in the ancient trenches of the earth, the unyielding stone provides the boundaries, dark and fractured by time. The autumn river provides the momentum, running rich with dark tannins and churning into fierce white foam as it tears through the shadows. Watched over by a few quiet birches clinging to the rock, they remind us that the landscape is shaped equally by what stands firm and what refuses to stop moving.
