Miss the last night? You can see (and touch!) sturgeon anytime at Great Lakes Aquarium 🌕🐟

And right now, there’s even more happening beneath the surface.

Great Lakes Aquarium is working alongside regional partners to help restore lake sturgeon populations to previously thriving numbers in the St. Louis River with hopes of empowering a self-sustaining population.

In addition, Namewag: A Lake Sturgeon Story, will be introduced as a new exhibit that will share the science, history, cultural significance, and collaborative work behind their restoration.

This is a long-term investment in a species that has called these waters home for thousands of years but we need your help. 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

Donations of any size help support the sturgeon rearing project and bring “Namewag” to life, creating opportunities for thousands of visitors to connect with these remarkable fish and the people working to ensure their future.

The difficult day has finally arrived. On Wednesday, Aug 26th, we said goodbye to resident Giant Pacific Octopus, Fitzgerald.

Since laying her eggs back in October 2025, husbandry staff had been closely monitoring Fitzgerald’s progressing end of life stage known as senescence. Her welfare was always our top priority, and the extremely tough decision was made to proceed with humane euthanasia after a veterinarian determined she was at the end of her healthy life expectancy.

Fitzgerald will always be remembered as the remarkable 9-armed octopus who inspired thousands, both in person and online. Fitz never shied away from interactions and was always inquisitive of enrichment. Her kind eyes, and gentle nature will be greatly missed.

Please keep her keepers and close patrons in your thoughts. We will share more updates moving forward soon.

Meet Minnesota’s state amphibian, the northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens).

These frogs are common throughout the northern portions of the United States and into Canada. Rather than produce a toxin, like some other amphibians, leopard frogs rely on speed and stealth to avoid predators. They serve as an important part of the food web, supporting a variety of mammals, fish, and birds.

On Wednesday, we were once again honored to host world renowned, National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore. Joel has visited the aquarium several times, setting up shoots to capture some of the amazing and unique residents that call the Aquarium home. These high resolution photos are then added to the National Geographic Photo Ark, used to document species before they potentially go extinct.

American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) participate in winter communal roosting. Numbers range from a couple hundred to over a million individuals in a single area. Roost locations vary for forested treetops to building complexes, with some cities advertising it as an attraction for birdwatchers. Scientists suspect crows take part in this winter roosting behavior for protection, warmth, and information sharing.
