Clayton, "Peg Leg" Bates was born in Fountain Inn, South Carolina in 1907. After losing a leg in a childhood accident, he refused to let it end his passion for dance, transforming his adversity into extraordinary talent. Performing with a handcrafted wooden peg leg, Bates became one of America's most celebrated and legendary tap dancers.

Our "Of Beauty & Backbone" exhibit showcases more than art and poetry—it tells stories of history, resilience, and identity through our curated pieces. Visit Bowie Arts Center to experience these thoughtful works and discover the reflections they inspire.
