Why do people TRADE Artist Trading Cards?

Because making the art is only half the fun. ❤️

The real magic happens when you hand your little piece of artwork to someone else…

…and they hand one of theirs to you.

Artist Trading Cards were created with sharing and trading at the heart of the idea.

Think about it.

You spend some time creating a tiny 2½” × 3½” piece of yourself.

Maybe you painted it.
Maybe you collaged it.
Maybe you doodled all over it.
Maybe you used an old photograph, a favorite quote, a scrap of vintage paper or something that simply made you smile.

Then you trade it with another person.

Now THEY have a little piece of your creativity…

…and you have a little piece of theirs. ❤️

Over time, you can build an entire collection of miniature artwork created by people you meet along the way.

Some cards might come from someone across town.

Others might travel hundreds—or even thousands—of miles through the mail.

And years later, you can pull out your collection and remember:

I remember who made this one.

I remember where we traded.

I remember the conversation we had.

That’s what makes ATCs different from so many other creative projects.

You’re not simply making something and putting it in a drawer.

You’re creating something that connects you to another person.

And imagine this…

A table filled with people from our own community.

Everyone brings a handful of ATCs they’ve created.

Cards are spread across the tables.

People are talking, laughing, looking at each other’s artwork and saying…

“Would you like to trade?”

You arrive with cards YOU created…

and leave with a little collection of artwork created by people you may have never met before that day.

Now THAT sounds like a pretty wonderful afternoon to us. 🎨❤️

And maybe…just maybe…

Ingk Paper Studio needs to make that happen. 👀

So…what is an Artist Trading Card supposed to look like?

Here’s the fun answer:

ANYTHING YOU WANT. ❤️

That’s one of the things we love most about ATCs.

Two people can start with the exact same 2½” × 3½” card and create something completely different.

One person might paint a tiny landscape.

Another might build layers of old book pages, vintage photographs and postage stamps.

Someone else might draw a funny little monster.

You might see:

🎨 Watercolor
✂️ Collage
🖊️ Pen and ink
🌸 Vintage ephemera
📰 Old newspaper clippings
🧵 Fabric and stitching
📖 Book pages
✨ Glitter and texture
🖍️ Colored pencil
💌 Stamps and postage
🦋 Nature-inspired cards
😂 Funny or quirky cards
🎵 Music-inspired cards
👻 Spooky cards
🌈 Abstract art

There really is no single style.

And that’s exactly what makes trading them so much fun.

Imagine sitting down at a table with ten people and everyone places their cards in front of them…

No two collections would look the same.

Every card tells you a little something about the person who created it.

Their favorite colors.
Their sense of humor.
The things they collect.
The music they love.
The stories they want to tell.

A tiny card can hold a whole lot of personality.

So if you’re thinking about trying your first ATC, don’t worry about what everyone else is making.

Make something that looks like YOU. ❤️

What do you need to make an Artist Trading Card?

Probably a lot less than you think. 😉

One of the most fun things about ATCs is that you can create them with supplies you already have sitting around your house.

You do NOT need a huge craft room.
You do NOT need expensive tools.
And you definitely do NOT need fancy art supplies.

Start with a piece of sturdy paper or cardstock cut to 2½” × 3½”.

Then…look around.

You might already have:

✂️ Old magazines
📖 Book pages
🎨 Paint
🖍️ Colored pencils or markers
🖊️ Pens
📰 Newspaper clippings
💌 Old greeting cards
🏷️ Tags and labels
🎟️ Ticket stubs
🧵 Ribbon, lace or thread
🧻 Decorative napkins
📦 Packaging
💮 Stickers
📬 Postage stamps
🗺️ Maps
🎼 Sheet music
✉️ Old envelopes
🖼️ Photographs
🌸 Pressed flowers
🧩 Scraps left over from other projects

And yes…

Even that tiny little piece of paper you almost threw away because it was “too pretty to toss” might finally have a purpose. 😂

That’s part of the magic of Artist Trading Cards.

Ordinary little scraps can become something worth keeping.

Layer a few pieces of paper.
Add an image.
Draw around it.
Stamp something.
Write a word or phrase.
Add a little paint.

There you go.

You’re creating.

ATCs are a wonderful way to experiment because the canvas is so small. You can try something new without worrying about ruining an entire sheet of expensive paper or committing to a huge project.

And because they’re made for trading, that little experiment might eventually end up in someone else’s collection. ❤️

“But I’m not an artist…”

If you’ve been following our Artist Trading Card series and thinking…

“Those are really cool, but I could never make one.”

We need to stop you right there. ❤️

Because one of the BEST things about Artist Trading Cards is this:

✨ You do NOT have to consider yourself an artist to make one. ✨

There is no art degree required.
There is no judging.
There is no “right” way to make an ATC.
And your card absolutely does not have to look like anyone else’s.

Can you glue a piece of paper down?

You can make an ATC.

Can you color?

You can make an ATC.

Can you cut pictures out of an old magazine?

You can make an ATC.

Can you stamp, doodle, paint, scribble, stitch, layer paper, add stickers or write a favorite quote?

YOU CAN MAKE AN ATC.

Some Artist Trading Cards are elaborate miniature works of art that take hours to create.

Others might be an old book page, a little paint, a torn piece of paper and one wonderful image layered together.

Both are ATCs.

And both deserve a place at the trading table. ❤️

In fact, sometimes the cards we love the most aren’t the most technically perfect ones.

They’re the ones where you can see the personality of the person who made them.

That’s what makes trading them so much fun.

You aren’t just exchanging a little piece of cardstock.

You’re exchanging a tiny piece of someone’s creativity.

So if you’ve been quietly following along thinking…

“I’d love to try this, but I’m just not creative enough…”

Consider this your official invitation.

Come play.

You might surprise yourself. 🎨❤️

🎨 TINY ART. BIG COMMUNITY. — DAY 2 🎨

So where did Artist Trading Cards come from?

Yesterday we introduced you to the tiny 2½” × 3½” works of art known as Artist Trading Cards — or ATCs.

But did you know this creative tradition has been bringing people together for nearly 30 years?

The modern Artist Trading Card movement began in Zürich, Switzerland in 1997 with artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann.

He created an exhibition featuring an incredible 1,200 handmade trading-card-sized pieces of art.

At the end of the exhibition, something special happened…

People were invited to create their OWN cards, come together and trade their artwork with one another.

No galleries.
No judging.
No worrying about whether your artwork was “good enough.”

Just people sitting together, talking about art, sharing ideas and exchanging tiny pieces of something they had created. ❤️

And the idea caught on.

ATC trading spread from Switzerland to Canada and eventually around the world. Today, people trade Artist Trading Cards in person, through the mail, in groups, at organized swaps and between artists who may live thousands of miles apart.

And one of the things we love most about the original idea?

✨ Anyone can participate. ✨

Professional artist.
Beginner.
Painter.
Collage artist.
Rubber stamper.
Doodler.
Paper crafter.
Someone who hasn’t made art since elementary school.

There is room at the table for everyone.

And THAT is exactly the kind of creative community we’d love to see grow right here. ❤️

Have you ever heard of an Artist Trading Card?

Over the next several days, Ingk Paper Studio is going to introduce you to one of our favorite little corners of the art world — ATCs!

Artist Trading Cards are miniature works of art measuring just 2½” × 3½” — about the size of a traditional playing card.

They can be painted, drawn, stamped, collaged, stitched, doodled, layered or created with just about anything you can imagine.

And here’s the best part…

They’re made to be shared and traded with other artists. ❤️

You don’t have to consider yourself an artist.
You don’t need expensive supplies.
And you definitely don’t have to be “good at art.”

You just have to be willing to create.

Over the next several days we’ll show you what ATCs are, how they’re made, what people use to create them, how trading works and how incredibly fun it can be to build a collection of tiny pieces of art from other people.

Sneak Peek

A little something dark and beautifully unexpected is taking shape at [ingk] paper studio. 🖤

This framed piece combines the character of a vintage book page with a striking black-and-white raven perched upon a skull. The contrast of aged paper, bold imagery, and the words of a story beneath creates something that feels equal parts literary, mysterious, and wonderfully macabre.

We love the idea of giving an old book page a new life—and this one definitely has a story of its own.
