Happy concert week! The final piece in our program is Illuminare by Elaine Hagenberg (b. 1979)

Using lesser-known sacred Latin texts, the five movements of Illuminare create a narrative arc with common thematic material woven throughout. The piece takes us on a moving journey through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace.

Our spring 2026 program continues with the
Spanish Serenade by Edward Elgar (1857-1934)

Although reknowned for his large scale orchestral works, Elgar composed numerous part-songs of great delicacy, beauty, and inventiveness. Composed in 1891, Spanish Serenade is a setting of the serenade sung to Preciosa in Act 1 of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s play: The Spanish Student. Subtitled ‘Stars of the Summer Night’, it is the second work with Spanish influence that recurred intermittently throughout Elgar’s works later in his career.

Rehearsals our in full swing for spring concert. Our program begins with Magnificat a 4 in B-flat major by Francesco Durante (1684-1755)

Francesco Durante is remembered primarily as a teacher and composer of sacred music. He began his studies at the Conservatory of San Onofrio, where he spent the last decades of his career as Director. Magnificat a 4 in B-flat major (formerly attributed to his pupil, Giovanni Pergolesi) is a choral masterpiece that captures the splendor and expressive depth of Baroque sacred music. Including both traditional counterpoint and modern, early Classical elements, the work incorporates a variety of choral textures, from majestic tutti sections to more intimate solo and ensemble passages.
