Oak wilt is a serious and fast-moving disease that’s threatening our beloved oak trees across the Texas Hill Country. If you live in or near towns like Dripping Springs, Wimberley, Fredericksburg, Blanco, Johnson City, Spicewood, Lakeway, or Marble Falls, it’s time to take oak wilt seriously.

Key Tips for Management:

•Avoid pruning oaks from February through June - fresh wounds attract beetles that spread the disease.
•Paint all cuts immediately, no matter the time of year.
•Watch for signs: pronounced veins in the leaves, thinning in the upper canopy, or concerning decline.
•Hire certified arborists for diagnosis and treatment.

Micro-injections and other unapproved methods yield less success when treating for oak wilt. These leaves are from a property where “micro” applications were performed preventatively. Looking at documents provided from the initial treatments, the trees received less than 50% of the required fungicide to protect from disease. Unfortunately, these property owners are now responding therapeutically, and in a tough position trying to preserve their trees.
