One of the easiest ways to make a painting too harsh is to go dark too soon.
When I look at a mass against the sky, I decide its value before worrying about the darker accents within it.
Often, the majority belongs in the middle value. Establish that first, then let the deeper darks come later.
Learning to recognize these relationships is a large part of learning to see.
