One of the easiest ways to make a painting too harsh is to go dark too soon.

When I look at a mass against the sky, I decide its value before worrying about the darker accents within it.

Often, the majority belongs in the middle value. Establish that first, then let the deeper darks come later.

Learning to recognize these relationships is a large part of learning to see.

Some of the most important lessons in painting don’t happen at the easel.

They happen when painters sit together, look at the same work, and see something differently.

Another artist can ask a question you hadn’t considered or notice something you’ve stopped seeing.

Painting may be individual work, but growth doesn’t have to happen alone.

That exchange of knowledge is something I’ve always valued, and it’s part of what we’ve built with Adventure of Painting.

Just because something looks dark doesn’t mean you should paint it black.

Before putting down a dark, decide where it actually sits in the value structure. Often, what appears dark against the sky belongs closer to a middle value.

Get that relationship right first. The darker accents can come later.

This is the kind of seeing we develop inside Adventure of Painting. Explore the Signature Course through the link in bio.

The longer I’ve painted, the less interested I’ve become in copying what’s in front of me.

I’m more interested in understanding why I stopped to look.

Was it the light? A large shape? The relationship between two values?

Answer that before you begin, and you’ve already made one of the most important decisions in the painting.

Learning to see this way is what Adventure of Painting is all about. Explore the Signature Course through the link in bio.

Before I commit to a painting, I often make it smaller.

A quick study tells me whether the idea is worth pursuing before I spend hours developing it.

I can test the shapes, values, and color relationships without getting buried in detail.

If it works small, I have something to build on.

Learning how to test an idea before committing to it is one of the processes I teach inside Adventure of Painting.

Edgar Payne wrote those words decades ago, and they’re just as true today.

Many painters believe improvement comes from better brushes, better paint, or another technique. Those things matter, but they aren’t what create lasting growth.

The biggest breakthrough happens when you learn how to think about what you’re seeing. Once you understand why a scene works, every painting becomes easier to design, simplify, and bring to life.

That’s the foundation of Adventure of Painting. We don’t teach shortcuts or gimmicks. We teach you how to see, think, and make confident decisions that will serve you for the rest of your painting journey.

A good painting begins with preparation.

I like to have my palette organized, brushes ready, and everything I need within reach. The fewer distractions I have once I begin, the more attention I can give to observing and painting.

Preparation may seem like a small thing, but it gives you more freedom to concentrate on what’s in front of you.

This is one part of the process we explore in Adventure of Painting.

Your environment shapes your work.

The places you spend time and the people you surround yourself with quietly influence the way you see, think, and create.

Some of my greatest growth has come from being in places that inspire me and with people who challenge me to become a better artist. Creativity rarely happens in isolation. It grows when you’re immersed in an environment that encourages observation, curiosity, and continual learning.

If you want to grow as a painter, don’t just ask what to paint next. Ask whether your environment is helping you become the artist you want to be.

If you’re ready to learn in an environment built around thoughtful instruction and a lifelong love of painting, I’d love to welcome you into the Adventure of Painting Signature Course.
