All hail the queen!👑🐝

In managed honeybee colonies, the queen is often marked with a small colored dot on her back. This helps beekeepers easily spot her, monitor her health, track her age, and observe her egg-laying patterns over time.

The color of the mark changes each year according to an international color-coding system used by beekeepers!

Next time you're exploring Discover Utah, see if you can spot the queen bee!

Can you spot the turtle in this photo?🐢

It's the Matamata turtle! He lives in the pond across from our Yellow Anaconda habitat in Journey to South America. Something you may notice about this turtle is the peculiar shape of its head. While it is unique, it serves an important purpose!

This turtle species has extremely poor eyesight, and the fleshy flaps extending from their head and neck help it to camouflage. They also contain nerves that respond to stimuli, such as vibrations caused by the movement of potential prey nearby.

Two words: Coconut. Crab.🥥🦀

Meet the Coconut Crab, the largest land arthropod in the world. They are found on islands in the Indian Ocean, the Indo-Pacific region, and the southern Pacific Ocean. And, as the name suggests, they eat coconut meat, fruit, nuts, and seeds.

If you come looking for the Coconut Crab here at the Aquarium, look closely! In the wild, they spend their days hiding in burrows or under foliage to avoid heat and predators, making them hard to spot.

We, along with the cute face of Soya, are here to remind you it's World Tree Kangaroo Day! 🦘

World Tree Kangaroo Day was created to raise awareness and support conservation efforts that protect Tree Kangaroos and the rainforest habitats they depend on. Conservation organizations are working alongside local communities in Papua New Guinea to protect forests, create wildlife-safe areas, and ensure a future for these extraordinary animals.

You can help Tree Kangaroos right here in Utah by learning more about them, sharing their stories, and supporting conservation programs protecting wildlife and rainforest habitats.

If nothing else, just know Soya is enjoying his favorite veggies in honor of his special day.🥕🫑🫛

Shiny pancake, meet viewer, viewer meet shiny pancake, aka the Lookdown Fish! 🥞

What's so cool about the Lookdown Fish, you ask? It's part of the AZA Larval Aquaculture Program. This program is designed to help accredited aquariums breed and raise marine fish sustainably, including species like the Lookdown Fish.

Lookdowns are known for their shimmering silver bodies and dramatic schooling behavior, but raising them from tiny larvae requires advanced aquaculture techniques and collaboration between institutions.

By breeding fish in human care, aquariums can help reduce pressure on wild populations, improve animal welfare, and build more sustainable ocean habitats for the future. This growing program is an exciting example of how aquariums contribute not only to education and conservation but also to the advancement of marine science.
