What happens when young playwrights gather in the very room where Stephen Sondheim learned from Oscar Hammerstein II?

Hammerstein Museum Board member and educator Jim DeVivo Ph.D. reflects on our first-ever Playwriting Workshop at Highland Farm in a moving new Substack article. He shares how Oscar's legacy of honest mentorship—treating young artists as serious creators—continues to inspire the next generation of storytellers.

As Jim writes, "It struck me... that young artists of all genres don't have enough opportunity to create a work, share it, and talk about it seriously with someone who's paying real attention."

We're grateful to Jim for carrying forward the tradition that began at Highland Farm more than 80 years ago and to the talented young writers who joined us for this special day.

The Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theatre Education Center has been awarded a $1 million Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant—our third RACP grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania!

We're incredibly grateful to Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Steve Santarsiero, and Rep. Tim Brennan for their steadfast support of this transformational project. Their commitment to preserving Pennsylvania's history and investing in arts and education is helping bring Oscar Hammerstein II's legacy to life for future generations.

This milestone moves us another step closer to completing the restoration of historic Highland Farm and creating a world-class museum and theatre education center where visitors of all ages can be inspired by Oscar's extraordinary life, work, and values.

Members of the cast of South Pacific recently toured Highland Farm, Oscar Hammerstein II's home in Doylestown, where he wrote much of South Pacific. We are grateful to Alex Perez and Chris Hutton of the Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theatre Education Center for leading such a thoughtful and engaging tour, giving our company a deeper connection to the remarkable legacy behind this beloved musical.

Following a spectacular performance of South Pacific at Bucks County Playhouse, Hammerstein Museum board members, supporters, and friends gathered for a special reception celebrating Oscars 131st birthday! We were honored to welcome members of the South Pacific cast and Oscar’s grandson, Will Hammerstein, who helped to make the afternoon even more memorable.

At Hammerstein Museum, we believe in the power of music, storytelling, and community - values shared by our friends at the Quakertown Band, one of America’s oldest continuously performing community bands.

Founded in 1877, the Quakertown Band has spent nearly 150 years enriching Bucks County through concerts, parades, and music education. Through changing times and generations, the band has remained a vibrant reminder that the arts have the power to connect us, inspire us, and bring people together.

Like Oscar Hammerstein II’s own legacy, the Quakertown Band’s story is one of collaboration, creativity, and the belief that music belongs to everyone.
